Anyone use this one or one like it to turn a laptop into a hot spot? http://virtualwifihotspot.codeplex.com/

This one works and I was able to connect my smart phone to the internet using the laptop as a router.
This helps when an internet connection is needed ad hoc by a group and not all have service at a location.
Also when access charged on a per device basis (hotels).

I had a Clear Wireless 4G modem once that had this feature built in. Some phones have it too?

i havent used that exact one, but windows7 with ICS can basicly do that.. as for 'hot spots on the go' i just use fox-fi app on my phone and no need to use laptop as a router.

Like mentioned above.. cant you just use ICS on your 4G modem..... Assuming windows, if not you NAT your 4G...

I used fox-fi until i got a non carrier locked phone, as wifi sharing is native to android. Its the carrier that strips the feature back out ( i bet most roms will restore the feature for you, if one is available . I know my SII skyrocket now has it native since i put CM10 on it ). The funny thing is when i got my unlocked phone i was still using fox-fi at first, until i ran across native sharing in the menus when i was having problems with MMS and needed to update my APN settings to fix it.. i didn't realize tethering was 'normal'...

Before that, when i had iOS it was a seemingly consstant cat-mouse game to keep that feature running. phfft

I have a couple of problems in using a phone for a hot spot. First, my carrier (Sprint) charges an extra fee to do so. Could root the phone and void my warranty but would still have the second problem, battery life. 4G sucks down the battery really fast. And 4G is just a dream in rural areas. Just updating apps on the phone takes a long time using 3G so I usually wait for a WiFi connection before doing updates.
