With the George Zimmerman trial over, viewership as a whole dipped on the cable news channels. Not even a Royal baby was enough to drive people to cable news in numbers comparable to the previous few weeks.

While CNN and HLN saw turbo-boosted ratings during the Zimmerman trial (the Asiana plane crash also occurred during that time), both channels fell afterward, with CNN dropping -32% and HLN dropping -50%. Fox News Channel–which actually lost some viewers in total day during the Zimmerman trial–never gave up the top slot among the cable news channels, but last week and this week has been back to its more typical ratings, topping its competitors combined in the primetime demo. That said, it also lost viewers, falling -2%. MSNBC also fell by -7%, almost exactly the same as the bump it saw during the trial.

Fox News placed fourth in primetime among ad-supported cable channels last week, and fifth in total day. CNN placed 36th in primetime and 31st in total day, while MSNBC placed 32nd in both categories.

Both CNN and HLN had obviously hoped to hold on to the viewers gained during the Zimmerman trial, but during their coverage both networks likely turned off viewers. On her primetime show, Nancy Grace, the face and star of HLN, demeaned the Hispanic Zimmerman with a racial attack.

They knew the increase in viewers would vanish the minute The Story was over.
The temporary (side show) they perpetuated was to convince advertisers they had
a fresh increase of focused viewers. Why was this case so important? Bucause
it had all the ingredients a well organized marketing campaign could hope. Race, Death,
Gun, Controversial law, and a huge public response on all sides. So really what was
the media's interest in Trayvon? $$$$$.

But....but...Nancy Grace can't say that about George Zimmerman. He's white, remember? So how does a racial slur towards Latinos affect him? It makes me sick how I've been hearing a lot from online comments lately that, because the existing law didn't convict Zimmerman, we have to come up new laws and drag him back into court until he gets convicted. I've even heard lawyers saying this. Ummmm, have they never heard of ex post facto? Another lawyer said that because the trial in a court of law didn't work, we now have to side-step that court and start basing laws and the courts on public opinion. She was a prosecutor in the Zimmerman trial. Isn't there a chance that, by saying that the law doesn't matter in certain cases, she could (and should) be disbarred?

I put Zimmerman right up there with OJ. The only difference is that Zimmerman is innocent. They'll drag this out until they find that his grandfather's nephew's son's daughter's friend's mom's boyfriend's uncle who was a garbage man in 1922 stole something....then they'll pin it on Zimmerman.
