Interesting video, though lead acid batteries give off highly explosive hydrogen gas when discharged quickly (like the dead short being created when welding). You'd want to make sure your battery cables are long and that you're far from the batteries if you tried this. My 2 cents.

You might generate hydrogen and oxygen with this, but it should only happen if one of the batteries has a bad cell. The bad cell will drop in voltage to the point that the current running through the batteries will start charging across this one cell and it will do what we call boil the cell and you will use electrolysis to disassociate the water in the cells to their elements of hydrogen and oxygen. This is something we used to monitor quite heavily on submarines since it has the potential to cause a really bad explosion.

Very interesting. I wonder how long a person could weld with those batteries before they would need a recharge.
