Well, I soaked the intake manifold in ammonia and then dilute muriatic acid. Between the two and some scrubbing most of the carbon is gone. I have decided to purchase gaskets for the intake manifold that block off the exhaust passages. The Heat Riser that restricts exhaust on the passenger side; directing it through the intake manifold is not there. The casting is there, but it was never drilled for the valve and bimetal spring. There was hard carbon on the underside of the manifold that was formerly oil; destroyed by the heat from the exhaust. Rather than heat the manifold with exhaust gas I am going to make a manually controlled (cable) heat stove off the exterior of the exhaust manifold. I also have the option of piping hot coolant through the carburetor spacer plate.

The company that I am getting the rebuilt engine from said they had a 360 cu. in. to replace my 360 when I ordered it. But now they say they do not have one. I could send mine in and wait 6 weeks to get it rebuilt. They have offered me a 390 instead. Normally it would lose $50 of my core for not exchanging the same displacement engine, but they said they would waive that because of the delay. Hopefully I can get as good/bad fuel mileage with the 390 as I would have with the 360 and end up with more HP and Torque. I am keeping the Autolite 2V carb and manifold, installing a HEI distributor which has a GM cap, rotor and ignition module (looks like the module in a Fiero).

Here's what the empty engine compartment looks like. Compared to 'modern' vehicles this is a huge space. I can sit on the fender and work on engine. Or with radiator and fan removed I can stand on ground and reach everything on the top side.

PIP "Unable to find server" I'll try again later to post this image.
Got PIP to work, here's the photo
