Mine was in the mid 60s on a training flight of 4, F4 Phantoms over Texas where I was stationed. We were at cruise altitude in formation on a clear day. This object approached from behind on our right and paced us at our 3 o'clock. It was your typical pie pan disc, flat on bottom and domed slightly at top and shiny smooth silver like a Delorean with no visible seams or markings. We all (8 pilots) watched for a few minutes radioing control. It was only a few hundred yards from us at the most matching our speed of around 450. They didnt have anything on radar. It was a solid object, not a reflection or cloud or anything else. You could have shot at it with a handgun. After watching it a few minutes it suddenly accelerated forward instantly and was out of sight in seconds. It never showed on any of our aircraft radars either. It didnt speed up and accelerate...it was just instantly going 10 times our speed. Even if we had got a target lock on it our Aim 5s & 9s would not catch it. We all got the routine debrief of the times ... say nothing more. The aircraft had no malfunctions and no one was watching any instruments. A lot of near reports say they affect electronics but we didnt note any.
Another time while at Tinker AFB in Okla City, I was in the radar room just hanging out when a C130 was making its approach. They declared an emergency after striking an unknown object in their path just to the east of Midwest City. They landed without incident, but the heavily damaged plane was towed into a hanger very soon and I didnt get to see it close. The fuselage just ahead of the tail section was visually bent down and most of the vertical tail was crushed or missing. It was first thought they struck a single engine private VFR plane, but no other wreckage or plane missing was reported. Nothing more was heard of that either. Not too much later than that, they also had a T-33 jet trainer go down in a residential area of Midwest City (just north of 29st St & Douglas Blvd) and exploded on approach to the same runway. Crew was killed and it was blamed on pilot running out of fuel if I remember right.
