Heard this one played on Sirius/XM the other day. Ivory Joe (his real name) was an amazing talent, wrote more than 2500 songs in R&B, Pop, Rock and C&W but died broke in 1974. Many of his songs were hits for others but this one was his in 1956:

Flashback! I totally remember that song from high school. I might even have bought the record. I'm pretty sure that I sang along with it. I didn't know back then that I can't sing.

He also wrote a good country drinking song called "Cold Gray Light of Dawn" that Nick Lowe sang at the close of a "True Blood" episode in 2011.

I can't even count how many covers of this song I'm aware of...a lot of them were Country artists.....but this one's ALWAYS stuck out to me just because it's so "out of the box."

There's also a reggae version of the song recorded by George Faith.

The first cover was by Mindy Carson (her last notable record) in 1956. (She sang "Wake the Town and Tell the People" in 1955.)

Sonny James took it to #1 on C&W in 1969.

Also recorded by Bobby Vee, Freddy Fender, Pat Boone, Dean Martin, Wanda Jackson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Terry White, Oscar Harris and many others.
