Jut an update on my "crash to desktop" situation. After hours of memory testing, CPU testing, videocard testing, and in-game graphics settings, the problem was found to be in the in-game graphics settings. Here is the lowdown:

Did you try high quality textures with FXAA unchecked? How much video RAM do you have? 896Mb?
Skyrim requires a minimum of 512Mb Video RAM, but 1Gb or more is recomended. Even the 1Gb "recommended" only gets you to "High" quality, not "Ultra." If you've added the HD texture pack or other graphics add-ons, you could be running out of graphics memory.

I tried EVERY possable combination. I have 8 GB of system memory & 896 MB on each videocard in SLI. I have added nothing to the game in the way of graphics packs or the like.
looking at system specs in your sig. i vaguely recall you doing a build thread, this was top-shelf hardware in its day. if i may ask, how old is it, and how much did you spend? (PM me if you're shy about the money)

These are just estimates, as best as I can remember, and based on my spending tendencies when building a system.
Wow, killed my first Giant Spider, Werewolf & Dragon. Bought some stuff, sold some stuff, looked at some boobies.......The Companions even want me to join them!
Yeah, I pretty much own Skyrim.

I did a LOOOOOOT before buying a house. I have all the houses you can buy, now... but it took a long time to get the first one because I didn't care to do that yet. I didn't do the main quest for a long time either. Boonie, you still have a long way to go. I'd say you're about 2% of the way through the exciting things you can do.

i haven't played skyrim yet, but in morrowind and oblivion i prefer khajiit, light- or unarmored, with the biggest blade i can get. face to face brawling is not my style. a little finesse goes a long way. i was terribly disappointed that there were no khajiit in fallout. why not? falloutians are certainly into mutations and manipulating genes. ok, not lore-friendly, but not impossible either.

I play argonians alot. Never have tried a khajiit, but anyone who knows me knows i am all lizard man, all the time.
I ran a D&D game based on Daggerfall, it was a lot of fun for me and my friends.

filthy lizard! didn't i see you in the Black Shalk? the (IMO) best mod ever for story, attention to detail, and dialogue was "reptile inseparable siblings" for morrowind. about argonians. i wonder if bethesda will ever set one of these games in argonia or elsewyr? i think that would be very different and interesting, in the same way morrowind was exotic in its setting, as compared to western or northern european fantasy settings of oblivion or skyrim.
I was really getting into a certain hard part of the game and started becomming very anxious & frustrated. But it was the game itself that reminded me what I needed to do to calm down:
