Found here... He has other works as well, but this seems to be the most popular.
The Egg
By: Andy Weir

You were on your way home when you died.
It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered you were better off, trust me.
And that’s when you met me.
“What… what happened?” You asked. “Where am I?”
“You died,” I said, matter-of-factly. No point in mincing words.
“There was a… a truck and it was skidding…”
“Yup,” I said.
“I… I died?”
“Yup. But don’t feel bad about it. Everyone dies,” I said.
You looked around. There was nothingness. Just you and me. “What is this place?” You asked. “Is this the afterlife?”
“More or less,” I said.
“Are you god?” You asked.
“Yup,” I replied. “I’m God.”
“My kids… my wife,” you said.
“What about them?”
“Will they be all right?”
“That’s what I like to see,” I said. “You just died and your main concern is for your family. That’s good stuff right there.”
You looked at me with fascination. To you, I didn’t look like God. I just looked like some man. Or possibly a woman. Some vague authority figure, maybe. More of a grammar school teacher than the almighty.
“Don’t worry,” I said. “They’ll be fine. Your kids will remember you as perfect in every way. They didn’t have time to grow contempt for you. Your wife will cry on the outside, but will be secretly relieved. To be fair, your marriage was falling apart. If it’s any consolation, she’ll feel very guilty for feeling relieved.”
“Oh,” you said. “So what happens now? Do I go to heaven or hell or something?”
“Neither,” I said. “You’ll be reincarnated.”
“Ah,” you said. “So the Hindus were right,”
“All religions are right in their own way,” I said. “Walk with me.”
You followed along as we strode through the void. “Where are we going?”
“Nowhere in particular,” I said. “It’s just nice to walk while we talk.”
“So what’s the point, then?” You asked. “When I get reborn, I’ll just be a blank slate, right? A baby. So all my experiences and everything I did in this life won’t matter.”
“Not so!” I said. “You have within you all the knowledge and experiences of all your past lives. You just don’t remember them right now.”
I stopped walking and took you by the shoulders. “Your soul is more magnificent, beautiful, and gigantic than you can possibly imagine. A human mind can only contain a tiny fraction of what you are. It’s like sticking your finger in a glass of water to see if it’s hot or cold. You put a tiny part of yourself into the vessel, and when you bring it back out, you’ve gained all the experiences it had.
“You’ve been in a human for the last 48 years, so you haven’t stretched out yet and felt the rest of your immense consciousness. If we hung out here for long enough, you’d start remembering everything. But there’s no point to doing that between each life.”
“How many times have I been reincarnated, then?”
“Oh lots. Lots and lots. An in to lots of different lives.” I said. “This time around, you’ll be a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD.”
“Wait, what?” You stammered. “You’re sending me back in time?”
“Well, I guess technically. Time, as you know it, only exists in your universe. Things are different where I come from.”
“Where you come from?” You said.
“Oh sure,” I explained “I come from somewhere. Somewhere else. And there are others like me. I know you’ll want to know what it’s like there, but honestly you wouldn’t understand.”
“Oh,” you said, a little let down. “But wait. If I get reincarnated to other places in time, I could have interacted with myself at some point.”
“Sure. Happens all the time. And with both lives only aware of their own lifespan you don’t even know it’s happening.”
“So what’s the point of it all?”
“Seriously?” I asked. “Seriously? You’re asking me for the meaning of life? Isn’t that a little stereotypical?”
“Well it’s a reasonable question,” you persisted.
I looked you in the eye. “The meaning of life, the reason I made this whole universe, is for you to mature.”
“You mean mankind? You want us to mature?”
“No, just you. I made this whole universe for you. With each new life you grow and mature and become a larger and greater intellect.”
“Just me? What about everyone else?”
“There is no one else,” I said. “In this universe, there’s just you and me.”
You stared blankly at me. “But all the people on earth…”
“All you. Different incarnations of you.”
“Wait. I’m everyone!?”
“Now you’re getting it,” I said, with a congratulatory slap on the back.
“I’m every human being who ever lived?”
“Or who will ever live, yes.”
“I’m Abraham Lincoln?”
“And you’re John Wilkes Booth, too,” I added.
“I’m Hitler?” You said, appalled.
“And you’re the millions he killed.”
“I’m Jesus?”
“And you’re everyone who followed him.”
You fell silent.
“Every time you victimized someone,” I said, “you were victimizing yourself. Every act of kindness you’ve done, you’ve done to yourself. Every happy and sad moment ever experienced by any human was, or will be, experienced by you.”
You thought for a long time.
“Why?” You asked me. “Why do all this?”
“Because someday, you will become like me. Because that’s what you are. You’re one of my kind. You’re my child.”
“Whoa,” you said, incredulous. “You mean I’m a god?”
“No. Not yet. You’re a fetus. You’re still growing. Once you’ve lived every human life throughout all time, you will have grown enough to be born.”
“So the whole universe,” you said, “it’s just…”
“An egg.” I answered. “Now it’s time for you to move on to your next life.”
And I sent you on your way.

Thanks for this. One of my favorite quotes... (paraphrased a little)

This important thing is this, we must be ready at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we would become.

The more you 'know', the less you 'want'.

and the less you care about your "progress" or "achievements". though Pride and all that sorts stuff sometimes creeps in...
I just don't like how as you rid yourself of attachments, there comes a point when you switch to the 'greater vehicle' (Mahayana), and I don't wish to travel down THAT path... part being selfish, part not wanting to "make all things equal' - I value my family and my little life and the whole "middle class life"... but I can walk towards that path, I suppose. Nothing's specified as to how to follow the path anyway... but I know that remoing attachments is a blissful thing, and can be addictive. I've ranted on here so much, and it was akin to me sitting on the toilet and pooping it all out -out of my head.
need to go work on some stuff... ttyl

I had been been avoiding watching that for some reason...

the same story, repeated endlessly?
spiraling endlessly
the wet stuff

grinding between gears

shearing

echos

in the dentist's chair
dizzy, holding the incense holder on a chain
or clutching the heavy cross
as we do the stations
on a college-dorm couch
on the train on the way home, exhausted
drifing to sleep in bed

on a deathbed
being born once again
or never actually being born at all...?
What was that my sweet sweet nothing?
I can't hear you through the fog
If I holler let me go
If I falter let me know
I don't want to swim forever
I don't want to fight the tide....

This reminds me of something..

"Right outside this lazy summer home
You aint got time to call your soul a critic no.
Right outside the lazy gate of winters summer home,
Wondrin where the nut-thatch winters,
Wings a mile long just carried the bird away.

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
The heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own.
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin brings,
But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenins and songs of it's own.

There comes a redeemer, and he slowly too fades away,
And there follows his wagon behind him that's loaded with clay.
And the seeds that were silent all burst into bloom, and decay,
And night comes so quiet, it's close on the heels of the day.

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
The heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own.
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin brings,
But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenins and songs of it's own.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own,
And sometimes we visit your country and live in your home,
Sometimes we ride on your horses, sometimes we walk alone,
Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own.

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
The heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own.
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin brings,
But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenins and songs of it's own."

-Robert Hunter "Eyes of the World"

Oh look, the person who wrote "The Egg" has the last name of Weir. Hmmm.

"Replacing God with ourself" is the ULTIMATE correction. it's the true baptism. Fixing the mistake. waking up. Not smugly, or getting a big head...

but

To actually comprehend the "GOD" within us. The "Buddha nature", as they say...

*googles it and pastes*

"I would define Buddha nature as the awareness which all sentient beings have access to. It is the background, if you will, of all things that arise out of the unmanifest world. If one were to think of it as a painting, it would be the canvas. You can’t NOT have Buddha nature. It is simply consciousness, awareness. It is not a thought, not a thing, but rather the witness to all these things. It is what gave rise to the manifest world. You can think of it as the vast intrinsic open space, or freedom, which all things rise out of. It is without even my awareness of it. It is pure consciousness, the true Self. "

Take a lizard, keep him in a stress box, stress him out, he dies. but have a second box he can go to which is not a stress box, he'll live. and if there's only food in the stress box, he'll venture back in there in order to get food, as long as he knows there's that "other place" he can retreat to...eventually... too much stress in the stress box, he'll stay in the other box and die hungry... but reduce the stress level and/or introduce coping mechanisms, and he'll do better...

We're no different.
what bothers me is that sometimes, the quality of life, the individual's POTENTIAL is hampered due to the coping mechanism. (although others THRIVE with it in place...)
*scratches his head*

On most days, I 'm not thrilled with the fact I will be 'no more' someday. It's easier with less attachments. Harder when I embrace the beings which share their lives with me... different than apathy, you care, but differently.

samsara... cyclic suffering.

so many suffering in religious delusions due to their inability to see past the metaphor...

Not that I "know" the "ultimate truth"...

it just HURTS me sometimes... but they are happy in their beliefs, so why should it bother me?

As long as they're doing good...adding to the positive in the world...let them be woship whatever they want... God or a pasta dish or Jedis forces or whatever...

I think it just bugs me when people say they "know the deal"... and are pompus asses about it* (different then "being confident in their faith")

Still reading... but when I got to this point, the very first thing that popped into my head was that quote from Airplane:

"What I wouldn't give to be 20 years younger... and a woman"

hahah... sorry...

That would explain a lot--- but still, if you have time between creating your next "Whee" flying squirells, a word or 2 of explanation re the larger scheme of things has been requested.

The "larger scheme?"
Darned if I know, man...(Didn't try to be insulting here, just not stopping to be too careful what I type)

I'm sorta just 'flowin' like a tube of toothpaste. On pretty much all the forums I frequent... Just tossin' out code and things and people have been doin' what they will with them... As William Gibson says "the street finds its own use for things"...
Been asked that a few times lately... I'm just building the boats... The folks taken them and do what they will with them... I don't knew where they want to go, and heck if 'I' know "the Way"...

Work's been "interesting" lately. Good, but kinda odd. Been nipping things in the bud, which has been pretty cool.

NY's been a little weird. There was no bump in politness on this 9/11 (a normal occurance) lots of subway violence. Almost no one's been talking about that, either...
Pointless Restrictions on soda drink cups. Tax increases...

We're being 'pushed' towards *something*, not directly, though, although they're tryin'. and I wonder if it's even coordinated.

Or maybe - I just need a nap...

Nah, too much to do-

Looking for some talented storytellers.

It sure matters to marketers

That's how they get you to buy a new widget when you already have a perfectly good widget...

Even if there isn't a creator (or creators) isn't it boring NOT to learn about 'em? Think about just how much *stuff* is paraphrased (recycled, perhaps) myth and sacred stories...

woa!

Look at that thing coming at us!!!

it's a weekend!!!!!
