Why do all the program icons move around and reposition, and the text enlarge when I connect a second monitor via HDMI cable....? I just noticed it when I watched a movie from online, connected to my TV. When I turned it off, everything moved...even when the cable was disconnected. I had to manually put them back where I had them originally.

Do to the change in the screen resolution windows moves the icons accordingly, it does not however move them back when the resolution is changed back.

Heh, you would think they'd figure out some way to deal with that by NOW....
(maybe in Windows 8? )

Likely two different resolutions on each of the display. Are you connecting and removing it from time to time? Are you connecting it and using it as a primary instead of the other. Either situation can cause this issue. Also changing the DPI settings for "large text" will rearrange things to make sure you can read the entire names of programs and files. Win7 does a better job of this than previous iterations of Windows.

This is with a 17" Gateway laptop with HD screen and connecting it to a 760 (?) Samsung HD tv. Using Wind 7. I had the same display on both screens, and yes when unplugged they stayed in the wrong places.

Ya and it can be annoying. I get that all the time with RDP to the office.

What is the native resolution of the 17" display? I am assuming the Samsung is 1920x1080? 2 different resolutions will cause this. ESPECIALLY if you are "cloning" the display.

I assumed they fixed it with Windows 7, cuz I finally got rid of said problem with this computer....maybe it's the Nvidia software keeping everything where it should be? Dunno, but even when I go to a low resolution and the icons get rearranged, they all go back ot the right places when i go high-res.
