Anyone have a Stag AR15? I am left handed and they offer a left handed gun. It would be nice to shoot an AR without gas in your face. It’s not bad outside but if indoors it is annoying. I'm thinking of getting one and just checking if anyone here has one.

I personally don't have anything Stag but from what I've come across on some of the AR forums they're pretty decent. I believe they're one of the very few around that make left-handed uppers. I also believe Noveske offers a left-handed upper assembly that is built with Stag parts. DPMS offers a lefty upper as well, but they are not a popular choice for a lot of people.

If gas in your face is your problem, a gas seal charging handle is probably an upgrade you want. After all, even righties get gas in the face if they get their nose right on the charging handle like they should.

Get the lefty upper if you find the brass moving through your peripheral vision distracting, changing uppers won't change the gas in the face "problem" (as far as weapon problems go, it's less distracting to me than many other weapon system quirks, they've all got one or more).

My buddy at work is a lefty and he picked up the L/H Stag. He brought it in to work and let me check it out. It's a good quality piece. I have a stag arms lower on one of my rifles and it fit all my mil-spec uppers and lower parts perfectly. I wouldn't hesitate to buy stag arms stuff.

Everyone I've talked to who has a Stag Arms AR-15 speaks positively about it.

Unfortunately, gun snobbery is alive and well in the AR-15 world. You have guys who are stuck on the "boutique brands", and will try to tell you anything less is trash. Some of them may try to tell you that Stag Arms is a second-rate brand. To put it bluntly, they're full of crap.

Actually, most of the AR-15 manufacturers make good products. There are only a couple that make questionable stuff (Olympic Arms and Vulcan Arms come to mind). And Olympic has taken steps to improve their products. So your chances of getting a bad AR-15 type rifle are pretty low.

The aftermarket situation is a little different, though. There are lots of aftermarket add-ons made overseas, with shoddy quality control. If at all possible, look for add-on parts made in USA, or at least somewhere in the Western world.

mike, if your worry about left handed and gas in the face then this is the upper receiver you need.

i'm looking into getting a couple of these for my next two AR builds, i don't want gas in my face when i'm running suppressed.

Would a gas piston system eliminate that problem?

A gas piston setup would eliminate the gas in the face, but would cause new problems of its own. Most notably, the infamous "carrier tilt" prematurely wears out the receiver and bolt carrier. The mass of the gas piston will also increase felt recoil and muzzle climb a bit. But that can be corrected with a muzzle brake.

That said, a few companies sell charging handles specifically designed to prevent the gas-in-the-face problem. Do a Google search for "gas buster charging handle". You can even DIY one, if you're so inclined.
