Pete Cosey, the musician who was singularly credited for bring Miles Davis into the "electric phase" of his long career with his "Bitches Brew" recordings, passed this morning in his sleep after a long illness. According to his daughter, he was surrounded by friends and family, some of whom played his guitars in the room as he slipped away. How appropriate.
Wow... I met "Cosey" when I was 13 and I'm almost 60. That's a musical lifetime spent being influenced by a truly visionary musician. I probably learned more about rhythm at the hands (and I must add "insistence") of Pete Cosey than I learned from anyone else. He enlightened me very early on to the fact that there was a world outside of "4/4" and made me explore it every time we played together. He knew instinctively what musicians were capable of and MADE you stretch your boundaries and I'll always be grateful for that. To this day, there are patterns that I call "Pete Beats" when I play them.......I'll miss him greatly.... The "Hay-Guy" loves you, Pete... RIP.
