Duh.. Snipers are force multipliers.. USMC has been using "Designated Marksmen" for years.

Sorry Uhl.. Training went up post VietNam.. I was a Combat Engineer.. Trained in Forward Observer, Sapper, "Marksman".. (I qualified Expert), M2 qual, M40 qual..
All that at Cpl.. Real Cpl.. not some contract turd.
Not even saying I was super "hard".. but throw those on top of Mtn Warfare, Desert Combat, PI Jungle survival.
Throw those on top of deployments to Phillipine coup attempt (nobody talks about that), Persian Gulf One, TF Ripper..

I was a lowly Combat Engineer Corporal.. No Super Stud Marine..

Marines are all about force multipliers. I can still build build/engineer a 60t bridge, blow same, Build a bunker, Destroy same, blend into the Desert, Woodland, Jungle.. Oh and drop you at 500m with an open sight M16A2.. given a 700 and scope.. Ya. lets not talk about it.
This isn't dick beating.. this is where the USMC is / was in 1992.. Today they have better weapons, and armor. We know the Army is a mess, and the NG.. well they mean well..
Never doubt the Corps.. You should know better.

If you're interested Stan I got a couple books you should look up. Shooter: The Autobiography of the Top-Ranked Marine Sniper by Jack Coughlin give a look into how the sniper role changed from hiding in the bushes to more of a focus on mobility and urban combat. The other is Trigger Men: Shadow Team, Spider-Man, the Magnificent Bastards, and the American Combat Sniper by Hans Halberstadt which is a less censored look (the book actually starts out with a warning about graphic content and such). Both give an interesting look into the sniper world.

Todays military (ALL) is a joke compaired to the military of 20 years ago. The vietnam era guys said the same thing about the post vietnam military. I work with the "new" military on a day to day basis, they are a total joke. If we ever have a total stand-up war on our hands where the bad guys have near the same in equipment,we are in trouble.

No slams from me. You're all right in my book.
What books do you have? I'm always looking for suggestions on new reading material.

Stan,
You have no idea how distrubing I find this statement. Attacking your own is beneath you. Enough said.

..Blackrams there is no more respected member of this forum.you are one of the more astute members, your post are more thought out than my own meandering ramling liberal attacks , I beleave you were in the Army & Marines ..

You must know what I am saying,,many Marines do not give 100%,,I have much military experience .I know the Marine Corps is the finest lite infantry in the world at brigade level, there are many whiners who should have join the navy, air force or army.where less was expected of them.there were times in garrison , I did not give 100%
I stand 100% with what I said & it is not a slam at the Marine Corp,,it is reality
I learn this listening to senior NCO,s, some had survived the island hopping in big 2 ,,pure hatred of the Japs even18/ 20 years later

..My son was an officer & when his unit deployed to afbagistan,I went up to Camp Lejeune & spent a few days with his NCO,s & men,,These are the finest men America has, I was impressed ,they were at a much higher level in intelligence & equal military competence with the men I served with in the 60,s,the men of the early 60,s were more animalistic, cruder, wilder, puking barfing drunker, crazier.less disciplined.

BOOKs you start with ,THE basics ,like = Inside the crosshairs,by michael lee lanning
MARINE SNIPER,BY HENDERSON,this is about sniper hero Carlos Hathcock, who carried his giant
Titanium testes in a very large wheel barrow
both of these books are inexpensive $10.00,hathcock book is an excellent adventure read

learning to be a military sniper is boring hard work , the ability to crawl with out being seen
the ability to hide unobserved for days ,not fun
the easy fun stuff is shooting
SIGHT ALIGNMENT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ALL OTHER MARKMANSHIP SKILLS put together..
Im sure the amatures will shoot me down on this with the latest gun book stuff
3 HOURS SHOULD BE SPEND ON THE GRASS SNAPING IN,DEVELOPING THE SKILLS YOU NEED TO PULL THE TRIGGER & SEND 50 ROUNDS INTO THE CENTER RING AT 500 to 600 YARDS.
use old pieces of plywood to make a form of the upper human body
moving targets are made by rigging a rope to a high tree, tie rope to ground ,ajust angle, use a pulley on the rope to hang weighted target ,,a target hanging on a limb with the wind blowing is usefull
I AM VERY OLD SCHOOL & NO ONE LISTENS TO ME any more
YOU NEED AN m-14 OR BOLT ACTION FOR THE LONG RANGE STUFF,ANY SMOKE POLE WILL DO FOR CIVILIAN WORK,,LOOK WHAT LEE HARVEY OSWALT DID WITH AN OLD CRAPPY RIFLE
lee harvey oswald practice sight alignment
In my day the words you heard most on the snap in grass was SIGHT ALIGNMENT PEOPLE
learn sight alignment on a .22 rifle start at 50 yards move to 100 yards he,he
the ability to turn over a quarter in the bottom of a 16 oz peanut butter jar will help you with the ladies.

I have not lived as other men & could care less what you beleave about me,most of you will never go any where, you will never do anything to fight for change.I do not know crap about Fiero,I know war!

You should stick to ranting about gays and Atheism, to say the marines hold a higher standard and other marines are below you is a load of crap. Last I checked we all make sacrifices doing what we do. I see airforce members everyday who have been ambushed in convoys, friends in the navy whom have taken small arms fire, and friends in the army who are mortared daily, damn shame they aren't as tough as those marines though, huh? Get off your high horse and learn what 1 team 1 fight is.

Back in the "days of" Uhlanstan they didnt fight like we do today. Embedded sister service elements were no where as common as it is today. As a Marine who saw only (mainly) Marines in action, I can see why Uhlanstan is so jaded.

Its his era that made Uhlanstan like he is-- much like us today-- who see the valor presented by everyone in the armed forces today.

Many pick on the reserves and NG, but many of them dont realize that over 51 percent of those forward is National Guard/Reserve units.

Many of OIF's nastiest battles had reserves and NG participants.

..Discipline is more strick in the Marines ,then & now ,I mean no disrespect to other branch of service ,,I know that training is tough in the Seals, Rangers special forces,,I was formed on the hard hot anvil of military discipline,I have not lived as other men ,& know there are always those who want to bring you down..
..I was surprised at the slam about a simple internet article..there are always parakeets chirping at Eagles .I stand by every word I said,I have a lot of REAL military combat experience .People say things on the internet they would not dare say to my face,Im 70 years old ,I am not as lean but still as mean,,fought a purse snatcher in Odessa Ukraine in 2010 a tough 25 year old criminal, a 3 minute brawl in the street he got 2 of my teeth & my wallet, but Im game!!
I quit the forum once, now I respond to the parakeets
