There have always been potential problems for macs, since it has users with 'admin' rights. Just that it wasn't profitable enough to use those holes.

As long as you have users that can install something, there is a danger.

Not hard to gain access to admin accounts, either... My last year of high school, they got a full Mac setup going for their then-new TV production courses. I happened to have that class but every computer was so locked down that they were all but useless for anything other than iMovie or web browsing, despite being loaded with the Adobe Creative Suite.

I opened up the terminal at startup and ran through the initial system setup program again, granting myself full access to everything. Took about 5 minutes

Macs have always been open to viruses, but this doesn't mean they are any more than before. The market share for Macs is rising, so naturally they will begin to be targeted more often.

I think its more accurate to say they were open to trojans. The user behind the keyboard is always the weak point and always will be. However, as more people end up with 'content devices' instead of general purpose computers that risk will drop.
