I can rebuild a motor based on specs and tolerances but I have no idea why some things are designed like they are designed. Why does a diesel have such a small piston top and a normal motor has the piston top and skirt combined? It seems pointless to have a skirt on gas engines unless it is for the oil splash.

This engine had a recall done back when it was new and for some resone this engine did not get that recall. the recall gave the new pistons with full skirts and better cooling tubes.
everybody is suprised this one made it this long lol.

Brings back bad memories. Don't ya just love blue hot steel?

I got a call one time to go see what happened to a big 12 cylinder Waukeshau and found the #2 cyl head, piston with rod and #2 crank throw still attached sitting out on the ground where the other 11 cylinders threw em. Governor had failed and the engine ran away. That was the kind of engine where it takes a crane or jib line just to set the turbo in place. They had closed the fuel valve, but by that time, it was sucking oil past the turbo seals and running on crankcase oil for fuel--junked the whole engine out.

I've dug lots of destroyed liner pieces out of crancases, especially on big White Superiors and reversible direction Fairbanks.
Bad memories.

OOOOOPPPPPPS

Some of those big diesels make so much engine noise when they are running it is hard to hear the detonation of pistons.
Unless the ones I hear at the local truck stop are just older.

We had an N14 over the weekend, where the driver said the same thing; "It......just stopped"
It will be interesting to see what the ECM says and what it looks like.

The problem with desesals, you can't tell from the sound, I especially hate the sound of a powerstroke when one pulls up next to me in traffic they sound like they are running over the lower end just sitting there, don't they have laws about noise pollution???
