The S80 all the way. The T5 is a HOOT to drive, the ride is unbeatable, the reliability is rock solid so long as you stay on top of the regular maintenance. The escalade is just bleh.
Having worked on a few Volvos, there isn't one made I want in my stable. Not that I really like your other choice. I'd keep looking.

I did most of the work on mine.. When I didn't is cost me. But they are just the same as anything else to work on. The inline 5 they have is an amazing motor. Loved it in my S70 T5
I can dig it But I LOVED my Volvo and plan to buy another one... I MUCH preferred it to my Charger I have now.

Just wanted to mention Jaguar's reliability went from complete crap before they were Ford owned to on par with the others in its class.

I love the S80s... but they are NOT reliable. When Ford first bought them, they were using a crappy run of GM 4T60E transmissions (4T65?).
They are awesome, handle well, very comfortable, and in my opinion, more luxurious than most Mercedes that I've driven... but just not reliable... plus, FWD... not a fan. Still... loved the car.

Volvo hands down. I hate SUVs except for boaters, campers and hunters. Escalade is a ghetto cruiser. If you want the Escalade, buy a Tahoe or Suburban and save $20,000. Basicly the same vehicle with more leather and gadgets. If you ever watch bait car, police use an Escalade 90% of the time because most of the car thefts are in the ghettos. Not being racist, but nearly every one of the theives Ive seen caught are brothers (its just a fact).

Better gas mileage. Drives and handles more like a car because it is a car.
I don't like SUV's when you don't need one. With the Escalade, their is a perception that doesn't fit me (but might fit you). Gas mileage is NOT good. I'd be a little afraid of the repair records for BOTH. Having said that, I prefer BOTH of them greatly to walking, and would be very happy to drive either one.

I've been looking at escalades as a tow vehicle for a car trailer. Do they really have the ghetto pimpmobile reputation? I don't see myself in either classification and they are affordable.

If you tint the windows, put gold spoke wheels on and blast big sub woofers
Stock i'd say they are fine. You'll get the sneers from Prius drivers but who cares.

Kind of a poor choice for a tow vehicle, I think.

I have a dodge caravan 3800 that I've been towing with. I'm thinking of doing some extensive traveling towing my lambo replica. I need room for my bed and a 42" tv in back so it's going to have to be a minivan with a bigger engine or an suv. I've never been a fan of SUVs but if I'm going to be towing a lot it seems like a decent choice. More power and a nicer interior.

I towed my 18' race boat with a 3.8 caravan. It was OK, but lacked much extra pull. I also towed car trailers and my dolly with smaller cars (up to S10 Blazer) with my 3800 Lumina minivan. I towed my Ferrari kit, Raptor and GT40 kit all over the country with it and no problems. It did lack on power. If your going to be towing a lot of even slightly hilly terrain Id also find an SUV or full size van with a bigger V8. If I remember the Dodge is only rated to tow 2000 lbs. An Astro V8 minivan is rated I think 5 times that if you can find a nice one. I got a super nice hi-top one owner conversion astro for less that $2000. There are even factory all wheel drive ones out there.

By the way... if anyone cares, when I was looking into getting a Volvo S80, as I mentioned above, the early ones have a GM 4T65E automatic transmission. This includes all the automatic ones from like 1998-2003 I guess?
Anyway... it wouldn't take too much to accidentally drop in an LS7 V8 engine into the front of one. Many of them come with straight 6s and straight 5s... but I looked and there's TONS of room on both sides of the engine (aft and rear of the engine bay). I suppose you could install one in there, then put a high efficiency but narrow radiator and cooling fan, and it would probably fit no problem. The only difficult part would be hooking up the wiring (which I assume is just changing the pin-outs maybe?) and building a front motor mount. Basically though, the ENTIRE drivetrain and transmission are all there for you. You'd want to swap out the 4T65E with one that had the appropriate bell-housing... but the CV joints and transmission mounting points are all there for you already!
