Anyone here play any of the CMx1 Combat Mission games? It's a real time/turn based hybrid WWII strategy game.
I haven't played it in years, and all of a sudden decided to visit my father and run a TCP/IP match. The scenario called for a company of Soviet infantry supported by an IS-2 company and a pair of FOs from battalion to assault a vital crossroads in a valley held by the Germans.
Approaching the outskirts of town my scouts draw fire from an MG in a foxhole, and also picks up sound contacts from the woods nearby. I ready my company, and a dozen IS-2s to go into action. Sweeping over the hill 6 IS-2s open fire with their 122mm HE to soften their defenses and keep their heads down while the company advances over the 80 meters of open ground. The other 6 IS-2 crest the hill to cover a cemetary and quickly draw fire from an AT gun concealed within. With my men nearly to the woods that had concealed the MG emplacement something goes wrong. Three IS-2s are hit and the crew begin bailing out. I lose 4 more before the culprits are identified, and the slow IS-2s can withraw to safety behind the hill.
A patient pair of Panthers concealed in a hull down position 500m away had opened fire, and with their more accurate optics and experienced crew began making swiss cheese of my IS-2s. Without the continued support and suppression of the 122mm guns of my IS-2s my company was now facing a defensive position without any heavy weapons. Needless to say casualties mounted quickly, while other men routed.
Lesson learned- Dear old Dad can kick my a** in a video game...
