My wife has decided that she just has to have an E Reader this year.

I've been looking around at them for a month or so now and settled on one based on price, screen size, and "options".

She wants something that she can use to read, and play games on as well.

I want something that won't break in a month.

http://www.pandigital.net/s...eID=43&ProductID=394

I've found the Pandigital , and it looks like a good compromise.

Problems I see with it:

It only reads PDF, and Epub. I have no idea what Epub is, but I can only assume that will be useless. Her reading will be mainly from the "Loan a Book" program, and other "cheap" ways of getting e-books.

Is there a way I could add more things it would read? There are a lot of formats out there,
Kindle(AZW) ,PDF,TXT,MOBI,PRC,DOC,HTML,EPUB,BBeB,and PPT.

What kinds are the most common? Is it fairly simple to convert the types, or is that a dream?

My wife loves the Nook. They just advertise less. She swears by the non-color because it looks like real pages. The screen is not back lit so it does not tire your eyes like a computer monitor. Anyway she has had the 1st version since it came out and it still works fine, we think we will pass it on to another family member, because I'm getting her the new one for her Birthday. Barnes and Noble has lots of free books to choose from and you can share ebooks with other people who have a nook. I don't know alot else, but do recommend it.

The color one has a glossy screen she doesn't like, and is back lit. But might be better for games.

OH, and the new one she wants is only $79 on Black Friday.

A LOT of books are in EPub format.

I use the Nook Color as a "Tablet", and have the Nook reader software, Google Books, Amazon Kindle reader and several other applications for reading nearly every format out there.

We have a Pandigital ( "white model" ), kindle 1, kindle 3, kindle fire, nook touch, nook tablet, and a generic 10" china tablet.. ( wife has the kindles, i have the nooks. we shared the kindle1 for a while as damned thing was too expensive to have 2.. $400 )

The Nooks and Pandigital an kindle are all root able or side-loadable so reading format is a non issue. ( the ink kindles are not.. and the china tablet came rooted )

Battery life on e-ink is nothing short of amazing it taps into zero point energy and charges its self.. well almost . The Pandigital lasts about 4 hours of use.. the nook tablet about 8. The fire, about 7.

Biggest thing for me is that hard core reading sucks bad on the eyes with LCD. E-ink is as good as reading paper and you can read for hours with zero strain ( and 2 months on a charge... ). But.. 6" ink is no good for stuff with a lot of picutres or larger format 'tech' books. This is why i have both. i carry the nook touch on a daily basis.

Doesn't matter really, you can convert non DRM books back and forth between formats all day long. ( now, purchased DRM books.. then you have to decide what store you like better and stick with their 'blessed' reader )

Some libraries only support one format or the other, and they are all DRMized..
