I run AVG antivirus and today after I logged on to the internet, I recieved this little popup. Since I know fake AVs often try to make you believe you are downloading a legit update etc, how do you know that you are agreeing to a legit update or in fact just downloading a trojan?
I am currently using AG Version 9.0.904
Is the update being offered update legit?

rule of thumb about internet popups.. NEVER click them.. EVER!.. unless of course you know for sure its ok..

Iv never seen an anti virus program that tries to update through a browser pop-up window..

Just load up AVG from your desktop, or double click the AVG icon on your task-bar to bring it up. There will be a "update" option on it somewhere, just use that to update it.. Then you know you are getting a legit update..

I've got to where I wont even click a pop-up closed if it's suspicious. I will use alt f4, or ctrl alt delete just in case.

I'd recommend moving up to Avast as well.

Always always always assume fake. Go to their website and manually update.

Thanks--I closed it thru Task Manager. I do notice tho, that AVG's User Interface does offer an option to update to AVG 2012 as well. I'll look into it on their website later. Ran Malwarebytes and Super Antispyware and found nothing, so hopefully nothing is amiss. I had Avast a couple of years ago and ended up with Fake AV 2009.

I use AVG and have never seen that popup. Looks fake to me.
Use the update funtion in the AVG application itself.

I rarely even do that, as you never know... but manually going to the site for updates you can be almost sure . i use those popup as a 'hey, go look for an update', not a 'hey, update now'
