i hat this laptop, it has non of the programs that ether of our old towers had, so here is what i am wondering.
the older tower that does still work but can;t get online with has like works, and word programs in it. can i transfer them to the laptop without to much trouble so that my posts have spellcheck and i don't look like a 12 year old. my spelling and typing skills suck for a 56 year old man to say the least and i used to write everything in word with the spellcheck and corrected all or at least most of my mistakes and then copy and paste to the forum.

so you guys who know how to use these things, just how hard would that be? the laptop is a toshiba and the tower is an HP.

You won't be able to transfer the programs because they have to be installed from an installer so all the system files are updated and registry entries are made.

But you can get a free and NICE office suite, www.openoffice.org I think is the address.

normlly, software needs to be re-installed. rarely can you just "transfer" them from one machine to another.

edit: yes - the openoffice mentioned above is a great way to go.

Some older apps can be moved, using things such as APPMOVER, but that usually only works for 'simple' apps - those which don't do much with the registery or tosses a million files all over in different folder (or creates hidden files, or creates many new folders)

99% of apps such as Office can't be moved,(or isn't worth moving due to the errors you'll get) you need to use a program to suck out (or reveal) the serial number then you can go and install it on the other machine

Also, newer OSes put stuff in different spots, and the older apps may HATE That...

What to do going forward?
Save hard copies of every app you install. (eothe rthe install Cd, or burn the app onto a cd.

Personally i would stick with libre office now that Oracle has bought sun. ( www.libreoffice.org ) Its the 'free' fork of the project. Koffice is also available, and is more lightweight.
