Yeah, I don't get the hype, either. I've tried them 2 or 3 times, and the burgers were just nothing special. The fries that they brag about seemed really dry.

I still think hardee's/carl's jr has the best fast food burger.

THIS. Carls Jr is my guilty pleasure. The Western Bacon, the "six dollar" burgers, the best of the FF burgers.

Problem is, I'm losing my taste for FF burgers. They're so damned loaded with salt, fat and grease, I feel crappy the rest of the day after eating there for lunch. A couple days ago, I had their BBQ chicken sandwich. It was pretty good, but still got a bit of that "too much salt" feeling for the rest of the afternoon. Seems like you can't drink enough water to compensate.

A mustard-cooked beef patty with additional pickles, cheese, spread and grilled onions diced up and mixed together on the grill before getting dumped on your burger. This is probably the most famous secret menu item, and for good reason: it’s pure awesome on a bun. You can get any burger done Animal Style.

Meh. I'm a burger connisour, but I really believe it is what you grew up on that sets your expectations for the rest of the burgers you ever have.

For me there are many places that make good burgers, but very few that make great ones.

Great:
Whataburger - (disclaimer: if you get a good location. Some of them are poorly managed and not worth your trouble.)
Pace's Dairy Ann - A real burger stand, unchanged since the old days.
Jucy's - Excellent!
Burger Factory (RIP.)

Good:
Andys
Fatburger
In-&-Out
P-Terry's (In&Out clone)
etc

I think what sets whataburger apart is their Buns. I could eat them by themselves.

But they usually put too much mustard on their burgers for me to really like them. (I know I can them without it, and I do )

IN-N-OUT
Carls Jr
Fudruckers
Jack in the box.
Those are the best for fast food burgers.
