In my never ending search for a free GPS for android that has the features of standard GPS, I found this "Waze" app.
It's description is "Waze is a social mobile application providing free turn-by-turn navigation based on the live conditions of the road.
100% powered by users, the more you drive, the better it gets. Join the community of drivers in your area today!"
So far it does what I want;
- Stores maps on the phone (not road tested yet).
- Auto night mode.
- Announces known speed traps, and if you are connected to the network warns of police presence. (would need to have more users in your area)
- Traffic warning
- 100% Free, and no locked parts.
- Displays speed on screen.
- Has Pac-Man dots for the car to eat.
- Prizes to seek out.
OK, so not all of those things were on my list of things that I had to have, it's an open source application that is using the data from users to build the map. So they put prizes in certain spots so users will go there, and they can record the roads in that area. The Pac-Man dots work the same way.
The stuff like announcing speed traps would not work here, as there are not many users, judging by the dots, and prizes around, I am the first here. But I have a few friends that are competitive enough to get the app just so they can get the prizes before me.
I haven't looked yet to see what points are used for, but I'd imagine that with the right people (truck drivers, delivery etc.) they would build up pretty fast.
So far it looks like Metropolitan areas are pretty active, as always for some reason.
Works with iPhone, Droid, Blackberry etc.
