What is a good weed killer? I get dandilions, crabgrass, "kreeping charlie", "pickers" , etc.

I'm also interested in a fertilizer, my lawn isn't in the best shape, it was new sod 5 years ago but has somewhat poor soil under it. I'm kind of new to lawncare, used to live in the country on old soil and the grass just grew well all the time all by itself al long as there wasn't a drought.

Thanks

put down a crabgrass prevention chemical, otherwise, you won't be able to control it with normal weed killer. Affordable? depends....

I guess by affordable I mean to ask which ones work? Do the cheaper ones work?

Check the active ingredients and compare.... I haven't purchased weed killer in years, so I can't help with product names. Sorry.

The active ingredient in 'weed be gone' is 2, 4-D. Buy it in liquid form in larger containers. Spray it using a hose sprayer when it is calm, and isn't going to rain. The mist from the end of your spray is also lethal to plants and shrubs so be damn careful that you don't get the mist onto things you want to keep. Fleet farm here has it in larger quantities.

2, 4-D kills broad leaf plants. It won't kill crabgrass. It will kill your trees and shrubs and garden if you get it on them.

2, 4-D won't accumulate in your soil. Sunlight breaks it down.

Read the instructions on the 2, 4-D container and follow them. Treat it like it's a toxin to yourself also because it is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...rophenoxyacetic_acid

It does work great however. It will kill almost all the weeds in your lawn (crabgrass excluded). If you are looking at your lawn and thinking, "But it's all weeds" don't worry.

I highly recommend using it. (With the above precautions)

At one point in my teens, my dad seriously considered doing just that.

I also like the spray fertilizer.

That you can get on your shrubs and it's fine.

The nice thing about the spray is that you don't have any 'lines' where you missed. It's easy to overlap and even if you do miss something the fade out is so gradual you won't notice it.

Best way I have found to get rid of dandilions is to just pull every single one by hand and keep pulling them every time another one springs up.

Crab grass and other stuff is usually taken care of with Weed & Feed.

Although I haven't used in in years, K-marts cheap brand of weed and feed use to work better than Scotts.
