Yea sounds completely odd to me too. Odd thing to say. But it is true! Since moving back to Knoxville TN, I have been trying to find a good barber. In that quest, I have had lots of BAD haircuts, a couple descent, but VERY expensive ones and a couple really good ones.
Well, this one is one of the really good ones. The cut itself is Nice, clean and exactly what I asked for. But that is not what made it so great. It was the whole experience.
I have a job interview tomorrow so I wanted to look my best for it, and it had been a couple months this time.. I have been extremely busy. So it looked really bad. I decided to try this little place by my office Called Frank's Barber Shop. Well boy am I glad I did!!!
I walked in and right away I had to double take. This did not look like a "Barber's Shop". I looked at the door..... Yep, Frank's BARBER Shop. The entry room is decorated in rich woods. Nice cabinetry full of personal care products and hardwood floors. I turn to the counter and am very pleasantly greeted by a lady at the counter. She welcomes me to Frank's and we get started. She sets me up for the next opening with Marcus. She asks if I would like a drink and I pass.
I go to sit on the seat I see in the entry room and she instead leads me to the "Game Room" to wait. Ok... WOW!!! This room is all decorated in woods and leather. It has 2 BIG screen TV's playing sports and news. The back of the room has 3 dartboards built into an inset section of the back wall. A Dart Alcove. The back wall of this alcove is covered in the biggest piece of cork board I have ever seen. Very clever! There is also a very nice pool table, a hutch full of books, a game table with Chess and Backgammon set up, several news papers, comfortable BIG leather chairs and sofas.. The kind you just meld into.. And a drink/snack bar with fresh lemonade, root beer floats coffee and who knows what else.
After a not nearly LONG enough wait.. I could stay in the game room all day.. And they invite you to! Marcus comes to get me to cut my hair. Once we discuss my double crown and how I want my hair and beard cut, he lays the chair back and coils a hot towel on my face, being extra careful to make sure I had a nose hole. Then he does the usual wash and rinse. When the towel and wash/rinse was over, he pulls out what looks like an orbital buffer.. ahh Massager for my neck and shoulders.... Ahhh That was nice! Especially after one of MY typical days!
He finished up with a GREAT haircut and rinsed, styled and dried my hair. Wow!! Not even any of those little hairs in my shirt that I always get! While all this was going on, I was calculating what I figured the bill for all of this unexpected luxury would be. To be honest, I was not happy at the thought that I might be getting a $100 haircut. No matter how great it all felt. But, this is part of the risks/rewards of letting random shops cut your hair...no questions asked.
What was my bill? $25. Will I be going again? YES!!! I wish I needed another haircut right now
I dislike all of that garbage at those places. I am just there to get a simple haircut. Don't talk to me, don't give me a drink. I shouldn't be there long enough to have a drink.
That's just me though. I got so fed up with spending $6 for a haircut every two weeks, I bought a razor and just buzz it now.

I gotta tell you, for a nice calming lunch break while I got my hair cut.. In the middle of a generally hectic, nerve wracking, work day... It is worth it and I will be back again and again and again. Around here, I have found a $6 haircut LOOKS like a $6 haircut. In my line of work, that is not generally advisable.

Yeah but if they mess up, you get somewhere around 10 free hair cuts and they fix it on the spot.
When I started balding I changed my hairstyle. I wear anywhere between a half and a 2 all around now. 2 is really pushing it.
I remember when I was a teenager (finished high school and working) back in the mid 70's and spending $15-$20 (a lot of money back then) for a damn hair cut! Gawd, I must've been stupid.
Now I use electric clippers and do my own hair. With age comes wisdom.

And frugality...
I haven't had a haircut proper in 3.5 years now... went from buzzed to long hair. Now, it's about 2-ish inches south of my shoulder blades. The plan was to donate it and I'm thinking about chopping it down some time in the summer. Should work out well enough.
Glad you enjoyed your haircut.

All that plus a haircut and blowjob... er, blow dry. Lol
I used to pay to have my hair cut until last January. I needed a haircut badly but I was out of time and needed to get to the airport quickly. Then I saw the dog clippers. Yaaa. It seemed like a perfect solution so I put the tall guard on it and starting hacking away. Then I used a smaller guard and cleaned up the edges. Amazingly it looked really good. My dog died in October, (Ironically I was in Tennessee on a driving trip to the Dragon near Tellico Plains when she passed), so she won't mind me using her razor. Now its mine.

I got the best haircut I got in a long time while I was on terminal leave in Minnesota. I had to get one last haircut before my retirement ceremony. I didn't want to chance trying to get one on base in Omaha with the tight schedule so I figured I'd get one up in Minnesota. I just needed something to conform to regulation. In the past they never cut my hair short enough and it wasn't worth explaining a military haircut to the local Great Clips. I sat down and asked for zero on the sides going to a one on top and the gal actually understood it. I lived up here for the past 13 years and the last time I needed a haircut to conform to military standards they finally got it right. I don't plan to see a barber or a hair stylist for at least another 3 months and then it's for a slight trim.

Excellent!
Sorry about your dog, but at least you can remember the good times with her while you're cutting your hair.
Gotta mention this... The first time I read your post I thought you said "tail guard", and it made total sense to me!
The best hair cut I got, the stylist used a straight edge razor to get the neck hairs and some stray here and there. then trimed the eyebrows without me asking!
Didn't help, I am still ugly. lol

I dunno, I'm 15 years older than you and I have not started "balding" yet. In fact, I got more hair than I know what to do with, so I donate it all the time to Locks for love. (bi-annually) Still, genetics are a ***** , huh? Love ya Dub!
Get yourself a flowbie..they rule!

In Salinas we have Don's Barber Shop. It does look exactly like a barber shop. Wood paneling like your grandparents basement, oldies music, and Don has been cutting hair there for over 30 years. No need to play pool. Don will be with you right away.$15.
