There once was a kind, friendly dog who used to live in a small town. His kindness and eagerness to help everybody was renowned throughout the town. People would oftentide look to the dog for what only he could do, and he always obliged whenever he could .' What a nice dog' everybody used to say, and the town was happy. Sadly, one day, a few people in town didn't like the fact that the dog was not very keen on cats. So long as the cats left him alone, he was fine. But these people were avid cat-lovers, and ignored the dog's friendly disposition as long as the cats left him alone. That wasn't enough for the cat-lovers, and they started to tease and then abuse the dog. He no longer felt inclined to help the other townsfolk, and spent more and more time trying to fend off the progressively unpleasant attacks the cat-lovers sustained remorselessly upon him. The more they teased and attacked him. One day, the dog snapped, and lost all reason, turning into a snarling biting vengeful being. And so the cat-people started screaming that the dog was dangerous, and should be put down. And because the cat-lovers shouted louder and louder than anybody else, and nobody in the town would stand up for the dog , even though they were' all that fond of cats anyway, they remained silent. And so the cat-lovers got their way, and the dog was sent away for ever. Was the town any happier when the dog was gone? Sure, the cat-lovers were victorious.....but it turned into a hollow victory, when the rest of the town realized what they had lost, as they stood by, and let it happen.

Knowing from experience that all of your posts are self indulgent, are you the cat or the dog?
Hmmm, well, he's a "dog-guy", and I'd say he's prone to see himself as a dog (scruffy and with his tongue sticking out) rather then a cat (prim and proper, with a dead mouse hanging out of its mouth).
What I wonder is...is it his town, his family, or PFF? Or some combination of these three?
Or maybe he's speaking about countries. Or he's actually talking about a dog.

Scott, I thought you might be the bright one to get it FR...I wrote it as the parable teller, in the third person, and not in anyway involved in the parable (and I love all animals, not just dogs ) Nick

Thank you. I think to some extent we are all being self indulgent when expressing ourselves. Nicks motives are noble.
Then maybe you can explain it's nobility. To me it just seems like a veiled reference to Nick complaining about his lot in life and how he is treated so poorly despite what a swell guy he is. Maybe I am completely clueless on this parable, perhaps I am just conditioned on what to expect from his threads and posts. It wouldnt take Sherlock Holmes deduction skills to find countless threads of him complaining about how he is treated so unfairly by so many.
Anyway.2 dogs and 4 cats. Where does that leave me?:$
But... people are now coming out and saying they don't like cats. It's getting more and more prevalent. Check around.
I'm pretty sure the dog will stay, and the cat lovers AND cat-hating dog will both shut up and just be normal, loving dogs. And I think it'll happen soon.

If I was the dog, I would stay in the neighboorhood and just continue doing what made me happy. I'd ignore those who I didn't like, and not go out of my way to waste time interacting with them. There are plenty of people who probably benefit and apprecietes what the dog contributes to the neighboorhood.
I always picture those who get all 'antzy' on the net to be sitting there in their underwear feverishly rubbing one out in a fit of rage...and I also think they have secret crushes on those who they supossedly despise. Some people just seem to NEED enemies.
Great parable Nick. Just now saw it. Let me see if I can work with it, if indeed I did interpret it correctly. It seems as if you are missing a piece though. The parable does not explain the realization of something lost. What's one dog when we have many ? You have a PM.

If I was the dog I'd get distemper or rabies and go around biting as many as I could, hehehe....
Spread the joy, so to speak...
Not sure it would really improve the 'quality' of the neighboorhood. Would increase the chaos, the drama, or whatever, but for some, it would make the area a LOT less fun to dwell in.
Guess it's easy enough to ignore the cries of the cats, dogs, and people who prefer either species when no one is actually making any noise to begin with...

One would think. On the other hand, it is hard to ignore ones creating waves. Good observation.

You mean the town didn’t have the dog to kick around anymore?
