I have an idea for something and I want to persue getting it created and bring it to market. I don't know if it exists yet or not. I did a search for it and didn't find anything like it. It's a novelty item. But I want to do a complete search and then, if no one has created it or has a patent on it yet, I'll persue it further. Has anyone done this before? Looking for some help as to how to go about with it. Thanks in advance.

I had a novelty idea once, and although I didn't follow through with it, I did pay a few bucks for a consultation with a patent attorney. I was told the first thing to do is put what you've got in your head on paper as best as possible, and seal it up in an envelope and mail it to yourself USPS, but never open it. That will put a cancellation date on the envelope that proves the date you had the idea. Then do as much as you can on your own to come up with a working prototype or at least all the plans you can draw up, and take it to your local patent attorney. He/she will take it from there. Do NOT respond to those inventors' helpers commercials you may see on TV.
