Being in the Army I have noticed that alot of soldiers smoke, chew, or chew sunflower seeds, or all of the above. Well, I don't smoke and I don't chew, but I do chew sunflower seeds. I almost always have a bag of sunflower seeds on me and a bottle if I am inside. Its a healthy habit as Sunflower seeds have fiber in them, so at least I am helping myself. LOL! Does anyone else enjoy sunflower seeds too? What brands or flavors do like?
up here in the upper MW, they sell "Dakota style" brand, they are the best i have ever had nice big ones. my wife loves them but they make her fart. she will sit down and eat half a bag and then the next day wonder why she has gas

I used to eat them whole, but now I prefer to shell them. I just throw a handfull in my mouth and spit the shells out. I tried some Buffalo style seeds, but my stomach didn't like them. I might try the BBQ style ones next or the Ranch. Any other good flavors?
$Rich$- Those "Dakota Style" seeds interest me, I wonder if they are available around here.

Those are my wifes favorite flavors. I like the BBQ but I'm not real fond of the Ranch. Like I said in my post earlier, the Jalapeno Hot Salsa ones are good and the Chili Lime is good for a change every now and then although I don't think everyone would like the Chili Lime (it's a unique flavor that's a bit odd because of the sourness from the lime).
I tried a few of the Bigs flavored seeds, one was a hot sauce flavor that wasn't as good as the Davids. I think I even saw a bacon flavor from Bigs but I'll have to check.
Edit:
Yeah I did. Oh Ruuumooooor....
Sunflower seeds are a decent source of Magnesium, which is hard to get without eating nuts. Alot of people suffer from Magnesium defeciencies.

I rest my case. I always carry a large bag, ... large ... when I am on the oil rig. In that explosive environment, it helps me curb my desire for a cigarette. Some times I am so busy that I do not stop to eat lunch and it also curbs my appetite. Other workers even bum handfuls from me and usually they have their own. I prefer Davids and as the ad says, "it's a snacktivity". As you also say, it is healthy.
I used to eat them by the ton but there's no really graceful way of getting rid of the shells. After complaints about finding wet shells all over the house , I switched to pumpkin seeds which I buy in bulk from Meijer's.
NOW the complaint is my sodium intake!

I always think what a waste it is every Halloween when people buy pumpkins to make jack-o-lanterns and they just throw the seeds out, to say nothing of the rest of the pumpkin. (I love pumpkin pie.)

Habit ? It's an addiction. I rest my case. I always carry a large bag, ... large ... when I am on the oil rig. In that explosive environment, it helps me curb my desire for a cigarette. LOL! Soldiers do that to me too. I get a large bag and it goes into my giant pocket on my leg when I am in uniform, I can go through the whole bag if we are out on the range all day. My wife tells me I am addicted too. LOL! I guess we are both addicted then, cliffw. :P
Every year I gut a Pumpkin and bake the seeds, Yummy! My wife started to throw them away and I stopped her and told her we were going to bake them, she looked at me like I was crazy. LOL!

We snack on sunflower and pumpkins seeds while watching TV. The wife buys pumpkin seed in 5 lb. bags, usually 3 or 4 bags at a time along with sunflower seeds. She gets them from www.nutsonline.com They're better than the David's brand and more economical.
