Hey everyone,
I work for a large GM dealer and we replace LS blocks on a fairly regular basis when they have failures for one reason on another. We have a 6.0L out of a denali with aprox 86k, cam bearing was wasted. It would need the cam journals line bored and oversized bearings installed. I can get the long block w/water pump for $300. A couple of the other techs decided to pass on it due to the machining work that would be required. However I thought I would get a general opinion here on the matter, then also get some quotes from a machine shop and go from there...

Do you think it's worth it? Do you think running oversized bearings in a line bored block could become a weak point in a 500hp mark?

Thanks

I would pass on that block. When you have core shift you never know if it is done moving. You could align bore it but it could come right back. core shift is a weekness in the casted part and should be steered clear of. thats my opinion though if that matters lol

LSx blocks don't core shift. Those days ended with sand core casting. Lost foam casting fixed that, and then SPM came along. The issue here is the bearing shell seized to the cam for whatever reason, then spun in the bearing bore.
It's not worth doing. Save all the parts except the block, main caps, and bolts.
Weakness isn't at issue, cost-effectiveness is.

After talking more with the tech that is replacing the motor, the failure was caused by a cheap oil filter shelling its guts out. I called a machine shop and they will machine it and install the new bearings for $300. I can't decide... hmm *lost in thought*
