HI all

Given that I am a custodian at a local YMCA for 4 hours a day, Mon. thru Fri. Would the things I am subjected to there coupled with an excessively hot bedroom weaken the Immune system?

Can heat weaken the Immune system?

I'm not a doc...nowhere near...but was at one time a health/ alternative healing nut.......(yeh, I got cured when I realized how many jogger vegens were dropping of heart attacks )

Heat generally wont really affect the immune system (it does other things)...in a YMCA enviroment what will get the immune system is the chlorine vapors from the pool......stick your head over a gallon of bleach and inhale deeply for an hour (NO--DONT) and see what that does to you.....being around a Y pool is no different.

Also you'll have faster bacterial growth in the warm humid conditions of most gym/spa places like at the Y so you are exposed to a higher concentration of bacterial agents, especially as the janitor in that facility, than most people. So even though your immune system isn't weakened, per say, it has to fight off more than others so it's just a numbers game at that point. Throw enough balls at a wall and eventually one will get through.

Even in hot environments your body temperature shouldn't change unless you get heat stroke or start running a fever. Thus, the functionality of your immune system shouldn't really be affected by that.

As for where you work, getting exposed more is probably good for your immune system but bad for you in the sense that it'll increase your chances of getting something.

Hi pavo_roddy,

None of the things you describe WEAKEN the immune system. Doesn't matter how hot the environment is (within limits). Your body temperature will be relatively constant. Just consumes more energy, fluids, electrolytes, etc. to keep the temp. constant.

You have two factors that can contribute to you getting sick more often.

The MAJOR one is the vast amount of people passing through the Y. Many of them will be sick, and therefore your exposure is greater just by volume. That has nothing to do with your immune system. It has to do with constant exposure and the odds that goes with it.

A minor factor is that if you are a custodian, you will be using some chemicals to keep things disinfected. Many of those can be mildly annoying to your respiratory lining, and a respiratory lining that is mildly irritated is easier for bacteria and viruses to attach to.

Sleeping in an excessively hot bedroom isn't a risk factor like being in an incubator or anything. Just makes your body expend more energy.

There you go. Let us know if you have other questions.

HI all

When I first started werkin there, I did get sick like 3 times in 2 months..... An now is the first time since that i've been feelin ill...... Bout 8-9 months apart....

Frontal Lobe, that respiratory lining thingy you had said sounds like the case i'm experiencing now.... For the past 2 weeks i've spraying a new chemical in the men's shower... It's called RJ8, a cleaner/protectant for grout....... We will be regrouting this shower around Christmas time, but until then I am suppose to keep using it daily.... Lol, I am not suppose to use alot of it, cuz it has an extremely bad odor, though when I do use it, the smell is very noticeable.... Always spray that crap the last time thru there, cuz of the smell!

First symptoms was a dry nasal cavity at the spot where it drains into your throat..... Then came a runny nose, and now I jus feel hot all day, everywhere I go.... Bought some NyQuil today, love that stuff, werks everytime for me!!! May take a few doses sometimes, but always werks....

Thank you all for replying!! Really helped clear the situation up BIG time!

I have access to the poisondex system and just looked up RJ8. It is a CORROSIVES-ALKALINE and a HYPOCHLORITES . I would read the direction on the bottle. This is something that you should have gloves on and not breathe it in.
