How can you tell the difference between a 302 and a 351W ? I have an 83 with a 351W with a carb and regular 4 speed (no OD). Looked at a 94 with EFI and manual tranny w/OD. The intake says 5.8 on it but the engine looks smaller. Could this be an optical illusion ? I'm hoping to swap engines since mine is a 408W and less than 5K miles on it. Seems more practical to get a newer truck and swap engines. To put in an OD in the 83 would cost $1500-2900 and the EFI from $2k-3500. My 83 is sitting at the GF's house with a brake caliper stuck in the brake position, rotor was glowing when I parked it. Well give me some ideas. Thanks Rick

A 351W has a taller deck heigth 9.5" inch vs. 8.2" inch for the 302.
Also, it has larger diameter crank journals and a wider intake manifold.
The distributor is taller and it features 1/2" inch head bolts instead of the 302's 7/16" inch head bolts.

can you put a 5.8 upper intake on a 302. I did look at the oil pan and it had a lower part in the front. Don't know if a 302 oil pan is the same.

Deck heights are dfifferent, meaning the lower intake from a 351 Windsor is wider than that of a 302. On the SEFI fuelie engines with the 2-piece intakes, the upper intakes are the same, just the lowers are different.

Early 302's had the old firing order, while late (5.0 SEFI fuel-injected) 302's had the 351 Windsor firing order. Not sure when the change was made, but I'd suspect it was when the SEFI came along. Roller cams were introduced by Ford sometime in the mid-80's, but not the same years for 302's and 351's. I think it was 1994 when the 351's finally got them.

Head pipes won't line up correctly between the two, because of the taller and wider placement of the exhaust ports from the deck height difference. Maybe a little tweaking can correct it, but maybe not. I would suspect the distributor length would be different as well.

Oil pan and pickup tubes were set for the chassis, so you would just swap over what works for the vehicle. If I recall correctly, Bronco pans had the rear sump that made engine swaps easier for street rodders, because they put the sump in the rear lke a Chevy or a flathead.
