My father's Dixon took it's final crap I think today when I was mowing for him. I called him and told him about it and he sounded quite fed up (don't buy a Dixon). I've been throwing around the idea of getting a bigger mower and offered to sell him mine if things worked out. We actually still owe about $1500 on ours just because we added some things to the loan and the payments are around $180/month. I think I can get about the same payments or less on a new John Deere mower if everything works well.

This leads me to my question. I currently have a Toro "Timecutter Z" (zero-turn radius) that I bought new in 2006. It has a 42" deck and a 12 hp Briggs & Stratton engine. There is nothing wrong with it and it starts perfectly every spring. What can I expect to get for it on a trade vs. selling it myself? I've tried looking for prices online but have come up with squat in my area. I don't want to screw over my Dad but at the same time want to get what it's worth.

Are you sure it's a 12 hp? That's pretty low power for a 42" Z. This is a new Toro 42" with a 19hp Kohler:

It sells for $2500 HERE.

Considering it's 4 years old, just 12 hp, if this is like yours, I honestly don't think you can get any more than you still owe on it used, not with new ones selling for $2500.

I have a Land Pride 48" with a 20 hp Honda that's a similar design (only quite a bit heavier) that cost me $4800 new and I'm not sure it would bring $3,000 used, and it's still under warranty.

yeah that's the mower. I'm pretty sure the motor is 12 hp, but I guess I would have to check to make sure, I know it's a Briggs though. If I could pay off the loan I would be tickled but I guess we'll see. Gonna go window shop at the John Deere dealer today, thanks for the info!

You pay $180 a month for a lawnmower? My whole lawnmower didn't cost $180 new. How big a lawn do you have?

lol, ya Ive bought cars I drove for a year for less than that. That mower would need CD/TV, AC, fridge and a power top.

My parents bought it brand new from K-mart for $850

Not mine but is the same model:

About 4.5 acres, probably more grass than all of jersey As previously stated, the loan would be paid off by now but we added on to it about a year and a half ago, which also made the payment go up. We originally paid around $2500 for the mower new.
