go to the apple store website, find the refurb section, buy. lol. most items are close to half-off last i checked. they are supplied with brand new accessories (headphones, cables, etc) and are given new shells. the only used parts are the innards.

Woot had the 8 gig touch for sale on Sunday. My son bought one with his lawn cutting money. Of course that does you no good today. I guess what everyone is saying is, you're going to have to buy another.

Teardowns, parts, etc. You didn't mention whether or not it functions at all to play music, or if it is just that the screen is dark. Could be just the backlight, or something more serious.
They're not that difficult to fix, just like working on little laptops. After I went through 3 hard drives on a 4th gen, I bought a nano (flash memory, MUCH more durable).

It does play music, screen lights up with no images, guessing it's the backlight that comes up...there is a blemish on the bottom of the screen, kinda like broken glass even though the screen is not cracked????
If you end up replacing it and intend to continue to take your ipod to the gym I would recomend either a nano or a touch since they have flash memory and less mass. They are less likely to fail when dropped.
