Boonie. I know it is far away but Check out Cabot, Arkansas. We have continued growth but are still a small town. We do have a bowling alley that is less than 5 years old and you can get decent houses for about 700 to 900 a month. There is growth as I stated and the economy is not bad for example houses here are still selling for about $99 a square foot. Construction is still going on and there is always the base to consider for civilian employment if you want. Just a thought but I wanted to share it with you.

You could always just get unemployment, general assistance and food stamps. Get it now while it is still worth something. Hell I think it just might be damned patriotic to waste and abuse these days.

Reno has the 78 lane National Bowling Stadium but all of Nevada is in bad shape right now. But jobs, just like gold are where you find them.

with gold @ $1000 I'm surprised you aren't returning to your old ways.
The amount of yardage you can move ~vs~ the color per ton in a small scale operation is prohibitive. In a small scale operation It only works if you hit a pocket here & there. It's really like gambling, if gambling was REALLY hard work.
The only way to make money is by moving proven small amounts of color per yard, then simply volume, volume, volume. And lots of mercury & cyinide.

Oh, blow that boon...........and I mean that in the worst possible way !!!!!
Round here (outside the cities) a 2500-3000 sq. ft with garage and lots of land goes for between 600 and 800/mo.........rent-to-own deals are only 100 to 150 more---and it is NOT unheard of to get a house and land for a buck--simply by making a private deal with the farmer that they keep the fields (tax and legal thing)
Hell, dude--my SIDE yard was 8 acres, and my back was about 1 before the corn............
for 1/2 of what yer payin.

Regarding San Antonio and it's heat, it does indeed get over 100 *F quite a few days during the spring/summer, and sometimes even in what some folks call autumn, but to me, it is not bad at all, because the relative humidity is considerably lower there --than it is where I live.
The other thing you may find annoying, is the traffic. It's not as bad as Houston's infamous traffic, but I found it pretty dam bad last few times I went there.
There is a large Fiero community there tho--and lots to do year round. As far as you speaking or understanding Spanish--I've been here in Texas on and off for 60 yrs and speak very very little. I can ask for a beer and plead not guilty in Spanish and that's about it. Used to speak pretty good Vietnamese, but forgot most of that.

Hey Boondawg you and your wife sound perfect to be a building Superintendent couple. Rent is free plus you get paid to tinker. This will also give you time to get the realistate license that you will need to sell property.

Damn Boonie House payment: 1300 (3 bedroom all brick 2175 Sq ft with a 500 sq foot garage with 10 foot celings) Milk about 3 bucks Internet & TV 150 for the full digital package with Showtime Starz and Encore Gas 2.48 a gallon No 2 at McDonalds...Less than 6 bucks
Just as a comparison. Also wanted to let you know that this town (Cabot, AR) has the fastest groth rate in Arkansas-100 people a month.

PA. Hell if your looking for a job in a bowling alley i know of 4 within 10 miles of me. if you want i could get some info from the 4 of them.
So speaks the guy still living at home with dad.... the area(Philly Metro suburbs) we live in is one of the worst high cost of living regions in the country, I would never recommend anyone moving here unless they had a good job lined up.

Wow, this is America? I am a little shocked. I suppose it all has to do with shipping, Hawaii would cost more too.
You would be doing alot better down in the lower 48.

Question: When looking for work in states close to the Mexican border, does speaking & understanding english well while speaking NO spanish put me at an advantage or disadvantage when seeking employment?
In your position, I don't see you having to deal with the public or underlings. I think it is a plus, but start leaning your Spanglish, ese. As far as states, I recommend Oklahoma. The people are friendly, housing and everything else is about the cheapest in the union, and people actually do go bowling there. My only problem was the weather, but coming from Alaska, F5 tornadoes and annual ice storms could be an improvement.

Please! I **** F5 tornadoes! Ice storms are Speedo weather!
I'm more worried about getting cooked alive...............
My Wife is all of the above, PLUS really smart! And has fairly big (although somewhat gravity-stricken) breasts, as do I.
Since I live in Michigan I am not in any position to offer moving advice. That being said, I'm sure your wife's big breasts could be an asset, but I doubt yours would be.

Sooooo what you're saying is you DON'T want to hang out.
*sniff*
It's cool. It's cool.
LOL.
I am actually considering San Antonio as my destination.
Hang out HELL, i'm movin' in! And I ain't takin' "No effin' way, shape, or form are you movin' in! I'm callin' the damn cops the minute you set foot anywhere NEAR my house!" for an answer!
I require cold beer & back rubs semi-hourly. Make that happen.
3 bedroom bath and a half goes for about $80000 right now. If you can find a house that has been foreclosed on you could do a short sale and have one for half of that.
The house next to me is empty.

Boonie, with all the experience you've got, have you considered trying to get a job with the manufacturer of the bowling equipment? I'd contact AMF and Brunswick (been a while since I've been bowling...are those still the two equipment manufacturers?), and see if they have any kind of opening that you'd qualify for.

Yeah, they are getting back to me. Mine is AMF.
I might just do something else if it presents itself.

I spent last week looking at places around Florida with my cousin. He found houses, usually 3br 2 bath short sales for $40-70K aound me. He found new town houses in Vero Beach (builder went bankrupt) for $70-90K brand new originally $250K, also 3BR 2 bath with a community pool. HOA : for $273/mo. Lots of affordable houses in central Florida. I'm not sure about your skill set being needed, but there are many bowing places around. Hot and humid in the summers.
Boonie, I cannot tell you what to do, however if it was me I would stay put, and try to get unemployment, save every scrap of money I could, sell off everything possible, (if you lose your job). Then as unemployment runs out and if you still cannot find work I would consider moving. This should give you a year to prepare, and get your "affairs" in order.
You paid in all these years, take advantage of it the Unemployment, and whatever else you can. Don't be too proud.
If you do leave I wouldn't' recommend here, there are no jobs around here at all. I've always been one to go to the coasts during hard times. There is usually offshore work, Oil work etc.

Yeah, and so is being pregnant. It's one of those things you just do. I have grown fond of turmoil. Nothing but possibilities. Sorry to hear of your fears Dawg but don't be scared. Life's too short.

You mentioned San Antonio. I grew up in San Antonio, from the 5th grade on. I don't live there. I am small towning it 60 miles away. Kerrville's population is 20,000. I am close enough to be in San Antonio if I want, when I want. It is a nice place which I love but it is big city. I do gotta say that, even as the seventh largest city, it is nothing like Houston or the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex. Texas in general is faring very well in these economic times. The cost of living is very affordable. We have one bowling alley here in Kerrville. I was there on the second of January. First time I have been in an alley in 20 years (family in town-something to do on a cold day). Of course I talked about you. It's gotta have 15 lanes, probably 20. I'll get you some contact info. I can even ask questions for you. I ain't scared. Folks out here are more small town and lend out a neighborly hand. You can get that in San Antonio too but it is easier here. Not that you would want to move here to Kerrville but the info should be representative of the south Texas area. I don't know what a bowling tech makes but I am thinking you could get more money with your heavy equipment skills, or that your abilities would be great for a refinery/gas plant. Possibly even a drilling rig. I'll ask at the local alley to get a general feel for the, uhhh, situation. I guess the normal stuff. Pay, hours, benefits, advancement, position availability/turnover rate. Heck, shoot me a list of concerns. By the way, I refuse to learn spanish.

Cool! See if they need a 25 year AMF Mechanic.
I would love to live in a small town, if there was work close by.

psst...Boonie, I'll trade ya You come to Nebraska and live, I'll go to Alaska. Back to the mountains where I belong
In all seriousness though, look into some stuff here in Nebraska. Job market is still pretty decent, I've accomplished more in 4 months here than I did in a year and a half in PA. They haven't been hit as bad here as the rest of the country, and the jobs are there. People out here seem to bowl pretty often too. I can never get in for open bowling thats how busy they seem. Westside Lanes in Grand Island is an AMF center IIRC. Try looking them up and giving them a call.
All sorts of manufacturing, construction, general labor, etc jobs around as well Drop me a pm and I'll fill ya in more if you are interested.

I could have a job for you in Arkansas. You can choose where you want to live, but it has to be on the west side. Bentonville to Ft. Smith area. You could choose far eastern Oklahoma if you want.
Mechanical skills and a little electrical knowledge is about what it takes. You will get a company vehicle (you can use it for personal purposes), uniforms, cell phone, tablet computer and a company credit card. Good bennies with pension. Starting pay would be around the $40k area. No time clock to punch either.
