Melanie asked me a couple of questions this morning I have no idea how to answer. I know we have a lot of tech savvy folks here so here are some questions that she asked this morning.

What is the difference between plasma, Led, and all the rest of the new TV’s?

Cell phone connections to the internet, are those wifi or what are they?

What exactly is wifi?

How does it work?

Thanks guys, and gals.

And anyone with another tech type question that I have not asked please feel free to ask it here?

Steve

Flat screen TV's are thinner, though not always lighter than RP(Rear Projection)

RP-TV's are simular to the old bix box big screens, they use a bright bulb and mirror to project the image onto a screen. Used to be the best bang for the buck, but I havent looked at prices lately. The RPLCD I have is about 16" deep and weighs 76 pounds. You could lift it yourself in a pinch.

Plasma uses gases to make the image, they use more power and are susceptible to burn in like a CRT, though newer TV software helps mitigate this. They have better blacks and contrast ratios and viewing angles than flat pannel LCD's

LCD TVs use a liquid matrix much like your computer monitor. The are immune to burn in, except in the most extreme cases. They use less power than Plasma TV's, though generally have less black quality, and the viewing angle is less

RPLCD TV's are simular to FP-LCD in thier electronics, but the image is presented on a very small ( 1" ) screen, then magnified and projected on the screen. They are probably the most robust in terms of failures

RP-DLP uses thousands of tiny mirrors and a very fast spinning wheel to create the image, they produce a slightly better quality picture than LCD, but have a lower reliability.

Cell phones can be 'tethered' to a computer, allowing you to use them for internet access. This is done over the normal cellular radio, no wifi.

Wifi (Wireless Fidelity) is just a term for wireless networking, functually its the same as wiring your computers, but at about half the speed. It is done over radio waves, at 2.4 Ghz. Not much more to explain than that I think

And then there are the 'LED' televisions.

What’s an LED TV?
It’s an LCD TV that uses LEDs to illuminate the display. There are two ways to do this: either by placing LEDs across the entire back of the display, or by placing LEDs just around the perimeter, which is called an “edge lit” display. Both techniques use less power than plasma TVs and LCD TVs lit with fluorescent tubes.
