i have done my hardware upgrades and i'm pretty much ready to install Win7. I upgraded my video card from a GeForce 7000-series to a GeForce 210-series, and my CPU from a 2.13 Core 2 Duo to a 2.33 Quad Core. The performance gain from both these mods was generally OK, but nothing spectacular when it comes to normal Windows operations (on my GigaByte motherboard with 3 MB memory).

Anyway, before i get rid of WinXP (completely updated) and install Win7 i thought i'd ask if anyone might have made the same operating system upgarde and had any software compatibility problems. I'm running Office XP and wonder if it will be OK with Win7 ? Any comments ? thank you.

By the way, the quad core CPU does not have XP virtualization mode (whatever that is)

Well, you can't do an upgrade install from XP...you'll have to do a fresh install.

So that well lessen any compatibility problems you may have. But based on what you have listed, I don't know that you'll have any issues.

Supposedly there is a compatibility issue with Outlook 2002 (the version that comes with Office XP). It works but it won't save your passwords:

Apparently it wipes all your emails out so backup them first.

Well, like I said, you can't do an upgrade install, so your programs can't be migrated. You'll have to back up all of your data and restore it when you reinstall all of your drivers and software.

Back up all your important files before you try. You can also run the upgrade advisor from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/Wi...upgrade-advisor.aspx
It will let you know if there are going to be any issues with your programs and setup.

Good advice during any Windows install. Even if it was possible to do an upgrade install in this case, it's never a good idea to do one.

I "upgraded" from XP to Win7. The only issue I had was with my DVD/CD Burner program - Nero, downloaded a new freeware program - RZ Free Burner, and it was fine.
As far as the install of Win7 over XP, you do not need to use the full install discs, you can use an upgrade disc. The install will competly overwrite the windows and program directory, as well as any other windows used derectory. If you made a directory in the root or c drive it should be ok, mine where.

Note on software I use, with the exception of my OS all other programs are freeware.
