Depends on your mentality and mechanical know how. Like a hammer, ya just have to know how hard to pound and where to hit. No pressure gauge or laser sights needed. If you were to pull out a torque wrench to torque a starter bolt they will pull the tool box out from under you and take it away.

If I remember correctly, you are a mechanic. I only said that because one time when I was unemployed (from my profession), I worked in an automotive shop along side a good friend of mine. He is ASE certified and has worked for many dealerships. He used to always tell me that.
Back to the original poster. Things with gaskets, torque sequences, and bearings are more critical for torque. Especially if they are near the end of a long line of steps to get to. To keep from having to do it again (for free if you were paid).

What the toolbox one? Oh I mean, I resemble that remark. I was told by an automotive instructor that the bolt diameter is a good gauge for torque specs. Thread count, depth of threads, type of material, hardness of fasteners, type of gasket, knowing common failures due to torque or sequence also is a measure of unknown torque specs. The one that gets me is the mid 90 and on chevy 4.3 Vortec engine. The service bulletin says that if the exact sequence and torque is not correct crank shaft bearing failure will happen. It may happen. Do I believe? Will I follow the torque and sequence to the letter? Maybe, Yes.
