23.26 feet diameter. Pi times the radius squared equals the area, so the square root of the area divided by Pi will give you the radius.

Edited to correct answer. I had given the radius as the answer and forgot to double it to get the diameter.

I keep getting 11.995 feet as radius, and 23.990 feet as diameter.

452/pi=143.876

square root of 143.876=11.995

That's what I get, too.

Checking by plugging in 11.995....

A = pi * r2

A = pi * 11.9952

A = 452

mmmmmm....pie. And doesn't it seem a bit odd that you can have SQUARE feet in a ROUND circle? Maybe the feet that didn't completely fit inside the circle don't count?

That may be a big area but it has a lot of wasted space because it is round. No one sells furnature to fit in a round building.

Let's go through this step by step. Maybe I rounded out too much.

A = Pi * r squared.
425 = 3.14 * r squared
425/3.14 = r squared
135.35 = r squared
Square root of 135.35 = r
11.63 = r

He asked for the diameter; you calculated the radius but mislabeled it. 100% "rounding error" (pun intended) is unacceptable in most situations.

I see, said the blind man!
D = 2r
D = 2* 11.63 ft
D= 23.26 ft

Changes made above.

Still no cigar. The stated area is 452 square feet, not 425.

The correct answer is D = 23.990 feet. It is pretty obvious that the diameter of the yurt in the NYT story is ~24 feet.

ROTFL! Why isn't there a smilie that rolls and laughs? Or maybe one that laughs until his head explodes. Either one would work here!
