Friday will be the announcement for the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
My bet is that Rio will get it.
I don't think it will be Tokyo, since it was in China so recently. But they have a gimmick they have pulled from their sleeves. Chicago has an edge, but witth so much emphasis having been placed on emerging nations getting more global attention, Rio might make it. Madrid? I dunno much about them but I think security might be an issue they consider strongly. Oh--and the gimmick? this:
quote
COPENHAGEN, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara warned on Wednesday the 2016 Olympics could be the last Games, with global warming an immediate threat to mankind.
Tokyo is bidding to host the 2016 summer Olympics with Chicago, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid also in the running. The International Olympic Committee will elect the winning candidate during its session on Oct. 2 in the Danish capital.
"It could be that the 2016 Games are the last Olympics in the history of mankind," Ishihara told reporters at a Tokyo 2016 press event ahead of the vote.
"Global warming is getting worse. We have to come up with measures without which Olympic Games could not last long.
"Scientists have said we have passed the point of no return," said Ishihara.
Tokyo has put considerable emphasis on staging a green Games with the planned Olympic stadium the first to be fully powered by renewable energy, including solar power.
"Tokyo is prepared to do everything to create the best conditions for the athletes," he said.
OMG, are they still on the global warming thing? I hope just for that stupid remark they dont get it. I dont think Chicago deserves it. That place will only get worse by then.
Dont know anything about Madrid, I see Rio getting this hands down.

Global Warming. A clever ploy by the Japanese. Said the other countries when questioned about it: "Oh yeah, Global...global warming! We'll be green too!"
Not to jack the thread, but besides complete irresponsibility on people's parts (like dumping motor oil down a storm drain), can't we just live on this planet without trying to cut off our nose to spite our face?
Okay, sorry. My vote is Rio. Not that I get one.

NOOO way man, the bill to clean up after that mess is more than we can take. We don't even have enough water to bathe, more or less grow food or drink for so many people. Takes money to make money. That reminds me, how does Obama plan to "fix the place up" for the Olympics anyway?

With lots of PUBLIC money for his PRIVATE friends.
2016? maybe they can run tour buses over to Michigan to let the foreign visitors see all the closed GM plants, since 2016 is when all GM/Chrysler's Treasury notes are due.

Chicago will get the Olympics and ACORN (or whatever new name they will have then) will register every foreign visitor to vote in the next election. The visitors will also receive free health care as part of a SWAG bag.

Chicago has been eliminated from Olympic balloting in the early rounds of voting by the International Olympic Committee, a stunningly swift defeat for the U.S. Tokyo went out in the 2nd round.

Heh, they were already packed in at Dailey Plaza for a victory celebration, . A stunning defeat for Obama. A stunning defeat for all of Obama's cronies who stood to gain money if it did come to Chicago.

Source? I was under the impression no announcement would be made until 12:30PM EST. Of course you did say preliminary balloting.

I knew it would never come here. Mayor Daley's plan was clearly done on the cheap, especially compared with China's last year where they practically bulldozed half of Beijing and built new facilities from the ground up. Chicago's plan included a big temporary stadium and housing village, and proposed some of the events to be held in parks and forest preserves, widely scattered around town and even across the border in Wisconsin. It was a laughing stock in my opinion. Mind you, I didn't want them to spend the money to do it right, either; I'd rather they give us a world-class transit system instead and some of the other things this city has been struggling with.

Yeah.... I think...........Obama probably did more to keep the Olympics away than anything else.
I wonder what the First Lady had to say to Brazil's 1st Lady? Michelle Obama had told Brazil's 1st lady, last week, that she was "coming after her in Copenhagen". The reply----"You too".
The Obamas bit off more than they could chew, with the little bit of political capital they had. IOC, evidently didn't get the memo that the whole world was supposed to be "In the Tank".
Oh well--at least President Obama did find a whole 45 minutes to spend with his top military guy from Afghanistan while parked on the tarmac upon touchdown in Copenhagen.

It'll be interesting here on the news tonight. I don't think anyone in the media predicted this. If anything, everyone predicted that Obama's trip to Copenhagen would tip it in for Chicago for sure.
For months, the city has been moving forward assuming they'd get the Olympics. There is a large recently-closed hospital complex just south of Chicago; demolition is slated to begin this fall. It was supposed to be the new home of the Olympic village.

This whole thing was the epitome of rookie-ism from a President with little experience.
I wouldn't pin it on Obama. The Olympics was a pet project of Mayor Daley's (although just a few years earlier, he was against it). He sees it as his legacy to bring world recognition upon his city. Obama was a latecomer and was just a junior senator when the Chicago Olympics were planned.

It had to be Rio. Because we need a summer olympics somewhere where it is their winter! Yes!
Now. Where can we have the winter olympics where it is summer? Antarctica? Too remote. Not enough hotels and restaurants.
Does Chile have anything far enough south and mountainous at its tip to hold it?
Obama. You are SO stupid and arrogant. I don't care about the money he spent to get there, and the time he could have spent on doing other things. Get real. He has communication capability wherever he is in the world. He can work from anywhere. It is stupid to criticize him for wasting the time to go somewhere for something like this. He can work the whole time he is going there.
The issue is that this is a job for his WIFE, or for Hilary Clinton. Or some other representative. It isn't for HIM. But he is too stupid to realize that. Well then why did he DO that? Because of his ARROGANCE. I'm Barack Obama. The world LOVES me.
AND HE REALLY THOUGHT THEY LOVE HIM! They don't love him. They just love that he hates america and weakens it. They LOVE that he makes speeches ripping on and demeaning his own country. They are incredulous about it. They think he is a fool. But they LOVE it. And Obama takes the fact that they love when he hates on his own country as the same as THEY LOVE HIM. Yes. He is REALLY THAT ARROGANT.
So of course, he thinks he is going to waltz in, and talk to the voters, who obviously LOVE him, and he will swing their vote because they are DAZZLED by him. Why WOULDN'T he think that. He has many americans DAZZLED, even while he tries to convert us from a constitutional democratic republic to a socialist state.
Well how about that! Turns out they DON'T really love Ba-rock star Hussein Obama after all.
I didn't expect Ba-rock star to be able to get Chicago to win. No shame he wasn't able to do that.
But HE COULDN'T KEEP THEM OUT OF LAST PLACE?????
I know it is just the Olympics and on the grand scheme of things is insignificant on its own. But the world just sent Ba-rock star a message. When you want to bash your own country, we love you. When you want to promote your country, uh, who do you think YOU are?
Answer: I'm Barack Hussein Obama
Response: So what?

What I saw in both of their speeches was do it for the fat kids ( Michelle), and another apology for America from BO. The IOC may have been thinking, fat kids don't fly, and we will not give it to a country whose leader is such a sorry a$$.

Praise god, what a relief. Like all this place needs is more traffic and more taxes. Really a relief for us suburb dwellers, because they we're planning on tearing up the south and west areas of the city for stadiums and temporary housing to push the ghetto out here. Sure glad we sent the right arrogant idiots to represent us in Copenhagen, without them it probably would've happened. Illinois taxpayers (not just crook county) dodged a huge bullet today. Really wish I could've been there to see the look of disapointment on mayor daleys face.

Actually I would call this a win for the USA. Hosting any Olympics is a money losing proposition.
Pyrthian wouldn't have wanted it here anyway---it's a socialist endeavor--The Olympics doesn't produce anything.
Just saw an interview from Japan--newsguy was talking to the people on the streets in Tokyo. One guy said "Well, at least we beat out the City that blows." I guess he meant windy city.
So, Chicago already had a site picked out and a building planned for demolition--no problem---they can go ahead and tear it down anyway--They'll want a big empty lot to build their giant Obama Statue.
