I'll bet the lefties never anticipated that folks on the right would organize and protest. That's *their* turf! They probably thought we'd just keep quiet, sit around stewing about their insults, that we are too busy, that we'd NEVER protest. Well, surprise, lefties. We're back. And we ain't gonna give up easily. You've awaken a sleeping giant. Your insults aren't working, your underhanded tactics aren't working, and we're just getting started.

They're also planning on paying for everything by just taxing the rich and expect the rich to happily go along with it.

...and the news media downplays the size of the crowd. Bastards.

First reports from AP and NY Times indicate 'thousands' at DC protest? (Updated with crowd estimate)

Rick Moran
What else would you expect? Both the Times and AP are equating the crowds turning out in DC to protest Obama's policies with crowds turning out to see the president later today at a town hall meeting.

Here's AP's and the Times notion of "thousands:
According to CNN, the event got underway an hour and a half early because so many people showed up at the bottom of Pennsylvania avenue, there was simply no more room for new arrivals.

Pictures supplied by Fox and CNN appeared to me to show a crowd stretching all the way from the Capitol steps, back many, many blocks, stretching off into the distance.

By any stretch of the imagination, such a crowd should have been indentified in "the hundreds of thousands." And yet. here's the Times report by Jeff Zeleny:

As President Obama flew to Minnesota on Saturday to rally support for his health care plan, thousands of protestors from around the country arrived here to demonstrate against the White House and Congress for what they say is an ever-expanding intrusion of government.

On a cloudy and cool September morning, scores of people waved flags and carried signs as they arrived in Freedom Plaza in downtown Washington for a march to the capital. The event was being billed as the culmination of summer protests at town meetings, where opposition to the president's health care plan boiled over.

"Scores of people...?" Are you kidding me?

The DC Park Police stopped trying to estimate crowds years ago. But given the over the top estimate for Obama's inauguration by some ("more than a million people"), I would say the number of people out today come close to matching the number on January 20.

More pics will be available later.

UPDATE

Stacy McCain just called and told me that Barbara Espinosa , a volunteer with Freedomworks, reports that the organization's "metered" count of protestors is "more than 450,000."

I think they missed a few hundred thousand but it won't matter. The official media line will be "thousands" unless someone in an official capacity - police or otherwise - says differently.

UPDATE II

Michelle Malkin reports that Capitol Police are estimating crowd at 1.2 million. ABC saying 2 million

The sad thing is I'm sure you really believe this, even though the facts prove you're completely wrong.

Doubt if he will even look at this.
Didn't he harp about "getting your facts straight before you post".
Hope he has some facts to dispute this so he doesn't look like a fool with his last statement.

I'm sure that you're one of them that loves the fairytale of Robin Hood.......steal from the rich to give to the poor. Not saying that your one of the people that are sitting back waiting for a check, but tooooo many willingly do nothing to contribute to support themselves. They just want to sit back and let everyone else "pay their way". I see it all too aften here.

It's interesting to note that Robin Hood didn't steal from the rich, he stole from the government (Sherrif) because they were over taxed.

9/12 was a transformative event

Sometimes an event occurs which is transformative in a way that everyone who sees it or participates in it instantly is aware of. Yesterday's demonstration in Washington DC is one of those rare happenings in my opinion.

The Daily Mail said 2 million Americans participated. My friend Charlie Martin extrapolated from the pictures an attendance figure of 2.3 million. Here is a time lapse of the parade portion of the event so you can get a feel for yourself of the size of the crowd. Whatever the actual number it is sure to be seriously underestimated by the Obama-besotted members of the press corps who are also likely to misrepresent the participants and their views.

But as a participant, I want you to know the attendees were wonderful people, civil and polite. They showed their respect for the Capitol and the event by leaving no mess behind when they were through, in marked contrast to the inauguration and the usual left wing demonstrations here.

The feeling I have is that this is a wretched political class, as full of itself as it is idea-less and talentless and the people know it. They are disgusted enough with the new American elitism to travel on their own dime by any means available to come here to let Congress and the President know that they will use every legal means at their disposal to overthrow them. And overthrowing them is precisely what they intend to do.

Congress is up for election in 2010. They can rely on the grossly inaccurate press accounts if they choose. But I'm telling them it would be a major error to do so.
- Clarice Feldman

*****

We are witnessing a very rare phenomenon, the genuine, broad based spontaneous political movement with no visible charismatic leaders.

Right after the stimulus bill passed, I got an e-mail from a woman I had once met at a local Republican event inviting me to participate in a small noontime demonstration in nearby Asheville. A couple dozen people showed up with banners and American flags to protest the spending. The person who had invited me was a concerned housewife. When the local Republican Party showed up with refreshments, they were, for the most part coolly received.

On April 15, I was at a much, much larger demonstration, organized in part by the same housewife, a veterinarian and a former sixties radical. Perhaps as many as 1,500+ people showed up, again with homemade signs, American flags and now a large smattering of Gadsden flags. A few local Republican elected officials showed up, but they were at the side of the crowd, not on the speaker's platform. We the People were the main event.

All around the nation, elected officials and pundits did not quite know what to make of the "Tea Parties" held on April 15. Pajama's Media estimated that the total participation in large metropolitan areas and small county seats all around the nation may have been in the hundreds of thousands.

On the Fourth of July, many of those who had organized the April 15 events, organized a further round of demonstrations. Later in July and throughout the August Congressional recess, further small demonstrations were held outside the local offices of Representatives and Senators. When some Democrats packed their town halls with handpicked supporters, there were often demonstrations being held outside.

I was not able to attend the September 12 rally in Washington, DC. I watched it on TV with several dozen other supporters at a local rally for those who could not make the trip. As I review the accounts and looks at the images several facts are apparent. Estimates as to crowd size vary by so much as to be meaningless, but the attendance certainly exceeded the organizer's expectations of perhaps 50,000. So many people showed up that they had to start marching early. The staging area simply couldn't contain them.

Once again, they brought their own signs, their own flags and their own unique attitude. They came from many states, many as from as far away as Texas and California. The crowd also contained a great many immigrants who are upset that America seems ready to adopt the failed policies they had been trying to escape. At its peak, it was wall to wall people. (Watch time lapse video, here).

Most significantly of all, those in attendance had not relied in any way on members of the current political class to get them there, nor had they showed up because their livelihood would be in jeopardy had they not agreed to demonstrate, as is the union way.

As I read the many reports on the Internet, I think this one, from Mark Hemmingway at NRO, says it best

"I asked one guy, who came up from South Carolina with 160 people on three buses, who put his trip together. He laughed and said, 'My neighbor.'"

Washington, DC appeared to be a most neighborly place on Saturday.

The political class often operates on the assumption that only those people who constantly tell other how smart they are actually are have brains. That if you don't relish life in the artificial confines of the District of Columbia and haven't come by to kiss their rings, you therefore must be lacking in the skills needed to govern. Last year a young Governor who had been more concerned with raising her family than polishing her resume with the right schools and the right career path let the political class know that she was not in the least impressed with their inside the beltway criteria for leadership. On Saturday a whole lot of people just like her showed up on their own time and their own dime to say it is time to end business as usual in the fetid, corrupt swamp that is Washington, DC.

Everyone in the political class, journalists, consultants, elected Democrats and Republicans alike, needs to know this: Those countless little-known people who established the local e-mail lists, organized first one, then two, then three or more chartered buses, held sign-making parties and packed box lunches, are not going to go away any time soon. Continue to enact legislation that we cannot afford and they will be back, perhaps in even greater numbers.

The Democrats need to realize these demonstrators are beholden to no one. The Republicans need to realize that they still are not trusted. Why should they be when each day seems to have another story of compromise on core principals and going along to get along with spending their children cannot afford?

While the media is concentrating on the anti-Obama aspects of the demonstration, there was also a message to the Republican establishment: Lead, follow, or get out of our way.

America Spoke

America spoke September 12th in Washington, DC. Real America. Not black America, not white America, not Hispanic or Asian America, not even conservative or liberal America. Real America. There were mothers, sons, fathers, daughters, newborn children and kids on the way up; there were many, many elderly and a lot of disabled folks, young and old, in wheelchairs. Many of these people had never been to a protest before in their lives. People were pleasant, polite and considerate. There was not a drunken eye in the house. The most unlikely bunch of domestic terrorists one could ever imagine. Contrast that with the Leftists' "peace" movement in Seattle a few years back.

We are not liberals or conservatives. We are Americans. I am not a conservative, I distain that label. It was dreamt up by some leftist so people like me could be buttonholed and dismissed as, "oh, he's just a conservative." And as the media has fallen further into the Left's maw, conservative has morphed into "rightwing" which has morphed into "radical rightwing nut" and inevitably, "fascist!" Of course Hitler was in fact a leftist, and allied with Stalin until he realized he had been duped. But the left glosses over that inconvenient truth, as they do with the truth generally.

I am an American. I believe in American values; that is, the principles and guiding documents on which this country was founded. Is it conservative to understand, appreciate and defend the United States Constitution? All public officials make a solemn pledge to uphold it. Are they all conservatives? Is it conservative to believe in the First Amendment? So are all journalists conservatives? These days, many "journalists" are actively trying to suppress any news that doesn't fit their agenda. They are not trying to suppress "conservative" speech; they are not hypocritically trying to stifle "alternative" views. They are attempting to systematically shut out the truth.

In fact, there are no "conservatives" and "progressives," there are Americans and un-Americans. There are no "traditional values" versus "progressive values," there are those who have values and those who do not. There is not traditional morality and new morality; there is only morality and immorality. There is no "Right" and "Left," there is only right and wrong!

And the Left, personified today by Barack Hussein Obama, is horribly, horribly wrong.

This rally resoundingly confirmed that America has woken up. Of course, before we even got there, we fully expected the mass media to play down the event. On the bus drive in, we agreed the media would put the attendance at "tens of thousands."

Sure enough, practically every news outlet in the United States has reported "tens of thousands." ABC, NBC, CBS and even Fox gave those figures; however the CBS headline only said "thousands." Dan Rather's ghost must still haunt the editorial rooms. Interestingly, The British Daily Mail newspaper reported "up to two million."

Early on, someone erroneously reported that ABC had said "two million." ABC later reported an estimate of 60,000-70,000. That quickly became the news of the hour, as the Leftist netroots sought to discredit the event by focusing on this mistake, even accusing Michelle Malkin of somehow posting a fake screenshot of the march. They later recanted, but continued to accuse her of inflating the attendance numbers, a charge easily disputed by just reading what she said.

Surprisingly, MSNBC's Tom Costello disputed NBC's own reported "tens of thousands" which they claim came from Park Police. (Since the "Million Man March," which the National Park Service estimated at much less than one million, they no longer provide formal estimates.) Costello said that "Our own people (NBC's) say in the hundreds of thousands." Surprisingly his report was perhaps the most honest, straightforward report of anything I saw from the networks. See it here.

I think NBC got it right. Here is a series of time lapse photos of the march from 8:00 am to 11:30am. The crowd was constantly anywhere from 25 to 50 abreast. I know. I walked in the middle of it, along the sidewalks to move forward quicker, and around the entire circuit, up to and beyond Senate Park. At times, we were so crammed together, breathing became strained. Taking the low number, and assuming a line of 25 crossing a given point every second for three-and-a-half hours, gives you about 300,000. Whatever the actual number, it was certainly magnitudes greater than "tens of thousands."

It was fun checking out all the signs. I took tons of pictures. The collage below is just a few of the many good ones I saw.

As one blogger related:

Chants on the march included "Shut down ACORN!" and "Boot Charlie Rangel!" and "Don't tread on me." There was not a single "Hey Hey/Ho Ho" in evidence. Songs included "Glory Hallelujah" and "My Country 'Tis of Thee." The most moving chant might have been when we walked past the Newseum, with its ginormous carving of the First Amendment on the side, and the crowd spontaneously said "Read that wall! Read that wall!"

I was in the crowd that began shouting "Read that wall!" as we passed the Newseum. It was indeed ironic to see the First Amendment covering the entire front of that ten story building, and to consider how vicious, unprincipled and dishonest has been MSM attempts to shut us up. It prompted that spontaneous outburst from the crowd.
My two favorites though, were "You Lie!" and "Here we are!" the latter being Steve Elliot's retort to Barack Obama's insulting threat, "we will call you out," which prompted a riotous uproar from the crowd.

I only saw a few astroturfers at the entire event: one lonely, frightened looking ACORN girl trying desperately not to be noticed, and a singing troupe. This was obviously a professional gathering. The men were dressed in tuxedos and women in formal black dresses. They sang a well-rehearsed song about loving the evil Blue Cross/Blue Shield just as it was, and held perfectly printed signs, like "Our Death Panel Turns a Profit" and "Let them Eat Advil." The satire of course, was meant to convey that this is what the "status quo" gets you: bad, expensive coverage. It was a prime example of the Left's typical non-sequitur argument: things are terrible now and you're terrible for resisting change. The argument illogically assumes things couldn't get any worse. Newsflash: things can always get worse, and under Socialism, they always do.
Here's a great short video of march highlights. See a good Glenn Beck video about the march too, with added comments by Chuck Norris.

Meanwhile, Obama fled to Minnesota for the weekend, finding, not surprisingly, an adoring crowd to sit raptly at his feet while he expounded on the virtues of his health plan as counterpoint to the march. The White House laughingly denied having any prior knowledge of the march. As the Washington Examiner reported:

On Friday the White House claimed they had no idea the rally was even planned. A ridiculous assertion that shows how dismissive the Obama administration and the Democrat-led Congress are of those who oppose their agenda. It is impossible to believe that President Obama knew nothing of the event. The denial is a perfect example of why the President is losing the trust of many Americans. He stretches his credibility to its limits, and beyond.

Amen.

All it all it was a great day for America. The sleeping giant has awoken again. We are on the march, literally. Now the work begins.
