So I found a good deal on CL, an old 20 gal fish tank with all the fixin's (plants, stand, aerator, extra tubing, food, water treatment chemicals, etc.) and 4 fish for $25. Snatched it up, got her clean and fish are in it, but the light's busted. PO said it's not the bulb, he tried replacing it already. Opened it up, and everything is pretty basic. Wires go from the outlet to white box (arrow shown), to the switch, and to the two bulb ends. I'm guessing the prob is the white box, but this thing is so old, I can't find the company who made it (maybe long gone).

Just FYI, number on it says ---- CAT NO. IG 13-20EL

Says on the interweb I might find something similar at the hardware store. Any fish gurus know how I can remedy this problem, or find this white box?

Dave

It's almost as cheep to take the light to a good pet shop and buy a new light, that size. think petco petsmart etc
A very good place specialising in fish may carry the part you need, more than likely a mom & pop place.
A hardware store is only as good as the floor person you happen to get, some don't know as much as they think they do.Take the whole lamp, you never know just what information you might have left at home.

The bulbs they sell at pet stores are the ones you want, Hardware stores usually do not sell the best bulbs for aquariums. It's a matter of what wavelengths of light are given off. A bulb that you can read a book by isn't quite as good as what's required for the fishes best health.

Florescent bulbs, right ? That white box would be the ballast. I don't know your town so, you might do an online search.

yup - and they go by the wattage of the bulb - or - just take out (twist & pull, like a tailight bulb) and bring to fish/pet store, and they'll hook ya up
even bring the whole thing to them - and they'll troubleshoot ya.
