Ive got a 1992 Honda civic thats acting a little funny.

Basically it had a check engine light this morning. A code 16 which is fuel injector circuit malfunction of some variety which seemed odd to me since it was fine last night and running smoothly.

Heres where things get strange. A little history I remove the ECU every night since the car is more or less the most stolen thing ever. ( it was broke into earlier this week luckily they only took the radio ) anyways so I unplug the ECU thinkin my GF didnt get it plugged in all the way. Replug it in and now its surging somewhat at idle and over heating because the radiator fan isnt switching on. Plug it back in one last time and it seems normal check engine lights gone now but heres the problem, when I short the diagnostic connector to check for codes stored the engine light just stays illuminated instead of doing its flashing, I was under the impression that a code ( cant remember which ) was suppose to always flash to say hey everything diagnostic is working properly.

So basically im trying to find out if its normal for my engine light to just stay on when in diag mode with no code or if the ECU is having issues. I was fairly sure it was NOT suppose to stay on in Diag mode even with no codes.

Any honda junkies lend a hand? If im not making sense let me know and ill try to clarify.

Not Honda but OBD1 Kenobi
If you unplug the battery it should start in the startup mode, clear all codes. Then after running a few it should set itself. Not sure if unplugging the module does the same thing.

Not sure if Honda is like GM.

Disconnect the battery, with the module plugged in, leave it disconnected for a few min.

Then check for codes again, if it flashes the sytem working code it is code 12 three times and then any bad codes.

Check the connectors at the ECM for damaged/bent/missing pins/contacts. ECM's aren't meant to be plugged/unplugged constantly.

pins are all good and the harness checks out, Im thinking I mighta just been thinking about the older GM ECU's when I thought it should flash even with no codes everything seems fine now. but if anyone has any more input im open.

www.superhonda.com search... you would be surprised. Haven't you ever looked into a twin key shut off for the car instead of removing the ecm? that's a little odd.

Edit: if i remember correctly it doesn't throw a code for all normal. been a while though.

I plan on wiring up some of my own "security" features but since the old ECU went bad not that long ago Ive just been doing this since it was convenient. Sucks though because here in phoenix if they really want it they will flat bed it right out of your front yard its pretty lame.

Multiple disabling devises is the best route to go.
Fuel line lock,
Ignition disabling devise,
Locating system, LOJACK
And more.

Don’t put all your apples in on basket.
