I think the people that lived next to me have abandoned their house. I haven't seen anyone over there for 3 weeks and the grass is out of control. The family was nice and they seemed to be doing OK and had nice things. They just vanished. I hope they work things out and come back because they seemed to be good people and kept to themselves.
Who would you call? I guess I could call the sheriff department but I hate getting the law involved as they just my be out of town for an emergency.

Is their house empty? Could be they got foreclosed on. Our neighborhood is full of brown lawns and empty driveways. Times are tough. If you go over to look, and the door is busted and you smell a foul odor, you probably should call the cops.
Property information is all public record. You can look up the details of their purchase online. I believe the county auditors website would have that info. You can also do a court record search to see if the property is in foreclosure.
Haven't been over yet, but after work tomorrow I will check it out in broad daylight. The dog is gone so I'm pretty sure they abandoned it or got kicked out. Too bad they were nice people.

I would probably call a friend of mine that's a KS Highway Patrol Officer and have him go with me for a couple of reasons.
I doubt that anything bad happened there, but JUST IN CASE, it would be up to him to maintain the security of the scene and he could be the first on site. I'd much rather have him do that than me, again, JUST IN CASE.
Second, if it is something harmless and they're just gone and had to leave suddenly, if it were me I wouldn't mind if the authorities knew my house was empty. Around here, they keep a little bit closer eye on things like that.

same all around my hood.. and its a nice semi high class hood also.. I've had my pad for 3yrs and one month. my house sat for sale for one year. I've seen the forsale signs pop up infront of 8 other houses around me in that time. 3 just took them back down and stayed. 2 still own and pay but nobody lives there (except when they are in the city and to drunk to drive to the burbs.. funny eh? One is in my back yard and its been "empty "for 1.5yrs) the rest you can tell they just up and poof gone.. And mind you this is just the onse that put signs up! and here I sit..
Yes sir, magick spells, voodoo, knocking on wood, and a $hit ton of BS somehow keep me in my house this long. You reallllly don't want to know the last time I made a payment! and I know I'm not the only one in this hood.. ohh forgot to mention the number of homes in this "hood" 35...... this is out of 35 homes! And this is only the ones i know about. yes there have been a few houses sold.. and for numbers I couldn't believe. Mine 2,500 Sq feet of just upstairs, the 1,800 of finished downstairs is not "Currently" counted even though it should. Its the 3rd nicest house around and decked out to the max. And some.. I paid 205 3 yrs ago, and a very old looking and unupdated home of half the SQ footage upstairs and unfinished basement just sold down the street for 175.. so well I don't really know. All I do every night is thank God and my lucky stars I'm still here. I know it will catch up soon though..... and I pray I wont be like the above!
I just read this last night on my ohhhh so depressing stocks site..... Ok I'm going back to my excessive rum drinking
Foreclosures continuing to rise in 2009
Foreclosures continuing to rise in 2009 The real estate market and overall economy are continuing to show stress in the form of high foreclosure numbers.
In the latest figures from RealtyTrac, foreclosure filings increased by 9 percent during the first six months of 2009. Foreclosures have now risen by a 15 percent margin in the past year, fueled by rising unemployment and falling real estate values.
According to the foreclosure tracking company, there about 1.9 million foreclosures nationwide over the past six months, equal to about one in 84 U.S. houses. Nevada, Arizona and Florida, which were central to the housing boom earlier this decade, led the nation in foreclosure rates.
The foreclosures have contributed to an overall decline in housing prices, although this has also had the effect of attracting more would-be buyers into the market, provided they have sufficient credit scores and sound personal finances.
"Unemployment-related foreclosures account for much of this increased activity, and the high number of borrowers who find themselves owing more on their mortgages than their homes are now worth represent a potentially significant future risk," said RealtyTrac CEO James J. Saccacio.

They have been in the house for 3 years and I wave to him every morning up until 3 weeks ago. No cars and the grass is 3 foot tall.

At least they took the dog. I know of a few people who packed up due to foreclosure/eviction and left and left their poor dog out back tied to a tree. I can understand not being able to afford to feed the animal, or afford a place where you can take him with you but at least take them to the pound so they have a chance. ( personally if i was that destitute, id skip eating before i didn't feed my animals )
My ( small ) city will come out and mow grass if its gets too bad and fine the owners, its part of the city ordinances.
Wont touch the mail box last thing I need is the guy across the street thinking I am up to something. But the windows all have blinds and the doors are locked. There is a gate to the back yard so I wont be going back there. But it doesn't look good, there is a flier for lawn service in the door that is a couple of days old, I threw ours away last Thursday when we came back from Ohio.

Call the city. Here, the city health department takes care of it, sort of.
My neighbors abandoned their place, they had been renting it out for the past year to multiple tenants. Not sure of their citizenship status, as they never spoke English. At least one of the owners still lives in town, so the city sends them a notice to mow when the grass reaches 12 inches tall, and after two notices they will supposedly send a contractor out to mow and bill the owner/mortgage holder. What sucks is that my house is for sale, and it certainly isn't helping my sale prospects. I would gladly take care of the lawn, for a a lot less than what the city will charge the mortgage company when it's all said and done, but I can't get the mortgage company's info to even offer. The city says they get their money when it finally sells, foreclosure or tax sale, or whatever, by putting it on the tax assessment, so they don't really care either.
I know but I hate to have the inspectors out here poking around. Next thing you know I have 10 violations and the guy will show up with a nice tan Going to give it a few more days then call Monday if I don't see anyone.
This is what it normally looks like The grass is about 2 foot tall now.

I would cut the grass and have 2 fieros and 2 4x4 cars there . And a few 2 way radio aerials on the roof, of the house and each 4x4. Whats are the inspectors you mentions for? whats the area like ? How is the crime rate there? Is there work in the area ? Is this a area that others have money or is it a poorer area? if I left the cars in the driveway , would they get stolden, like some areas here? Is there houses broken into when the owners are at work , like some areas here ? Is there shops near there?
If you have a job then its a good idea to hang on to it. We are in a slump here as well. I look for crime to increase as things get worse. Thats why I hope that they come back.

Milan, just north of Norwalk. I have lots of family up there but we didn't have time for any side trips this time or I would have looked up some Fiero brothers
Something funny, they went bankrupt the same time they purchased the house. Its amazing what you can find online with just a name. Grass is still up and no cars, guess I will try and call someone Monday.

The rest of our street keeps to themselves and I don't really talk to anyone. These are the same people that smelled smoke for 5 hours before our home burst into flames and almost killed us.
Just don't want the house to turn into a crack house or get vandalized and start falling apart. I don't care about the house but I just don't want people looking that close at my house. Guess I will have to start locking up my stuff again.

I hear you, I would knock on the door of a crack house in the worse part of town if I smelled smoke and saw it coming from inside the house. If I smell smoke I try to find out where its coming from, I have got in my car and drove around until I find the source of the smoke if I have to because I know what could be happening.
As much as I want them to come back it doesn't look like its going to happen. I don't know the story and probably will never know. But they seemed like nice people and had 2 kids. The young boy was always interested in my cars when I was working on them and would come over and look in the window when I was working on the stereo. I have even helped Jose work on his car. That is the closest I have been to a neighbor in 20 years. So I guess thats what is more upsetting, loosing that connection.

Burn marks on the grass in the back lawn? Funny lights reported right before they "left"? Have you ever noticed a funny smell--like ozone? Have YOUR home lights ever flickered on/off for a couple of seconds for no apparent reason?
These 'people' that are now 'gone'--did you ever look closely at their ears?

Might be the last thing you ever do too. Personally I wouldn't screw around with those paranoid and stoned people. If i saw enough smoke to call it a fire, i would call 911, but i wouldn't go over to check things out personally.

LOL good thing I don't frequent those neighborhoods, I just don't want the house next door to start looking like one. There is privacy fence on 2 sides so the back yard isn't as visible from the rest of the neighborhood.
