Don't get into a situation where the guy next to you can't count on you. There is nothing good about that.

But

If you do decide to become a Marine good luck to you and godbless. I think this country makes the best soldiers in the world. I doubt very much that you will ever regret what you find being a Marine.

But, leppy--examine yourself and what you expect to get and give. This is not to be taken lightly--it can be both life altering and life ending. Odds are, you WILL eventually deploy to an area of "less-than-friendly"- conditions.
Remember that word--'deploy'. You will hear it again--and again.

Never ever fall asleep during map reading!
The build out from that is Forward Observer. You had damn well better know how to read a map if you're going to call for fire or support.
Don't rely on some butter bar second Lt to know how to do it.

Firing and emplacing weapons should be something you can and will do in your sleep.
Knowing maps will save lives, and keep you fed and supplied. GPS is cool and easy.. until the batteries die and they will die.
Never ever rely on tech
Always have a GOTH plan

and this may seem sentimental etc.. but Medieval is a core tenant.

Axes flash, broadswords swing
Shining armors piercing ring
Horses run with polished shield
Fight those bastards til they yield

Midnight mare, blood red roan
Fight to keep this land your own
Sound the horn and call the cry
How many of them can we make die?

Follow orders as youre told
Make their yellow blood run cold
Fight until you die or drop
A force like ours is hard to stop

Close your mind to stress and pain
Fight til youre no longer sane
Let not one damn cur pass by
How many of them can we make die?

Guard your women and children well
Send these bastards back to Hell
Well teach them the ways of war
And they wont come here anymore

Use your shield and use your head
Fight til everyone is dead
Raise the flag up to the sky
How many of them can we make die?

Dawn has broke, the time has come
Move your feet to the marching drum
Well win the war and pay the toll
Fight as one in heart and soul

Midnight mare and blood red roan
Fight to keep this land your own
Sound the horn and call the cry
How many of them can we make die?

Axes flash, broadswords swing
Shining armors piercing ring
Horses run with polished shield
Fight those bastards til they yield

Midnight mare and blood red roan
Fight to keep this land your own
Sound the horn and call the cry
How many of them can we make die?

Guard your women and daughters well
Send that bastard Jody back to Hell
We'll teach them the ways of war
And Jody won't come here no more

You had a good home but you left...
Company: You're right!
Sgt: Jody was there when you left...
Company: You're right!
Sgt: Your Baby was there when you left...
Company: You're right!
Sgt: Sound off!
Company: One, two
Sgt: Sound off!
Company: Three, four.
Sgt: Cadence Count
Company: One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four!
Sgt: Your baby was lonely - as lonely could be ...
Company: Until Jody provided company!
Sgt: Ain't it great to have a pal...
Company: Who works so hard to keep up morale!
Sgt: You ain't got nothing to worry about...
Company: He'll keep her happy till I get out!
Sgt: You won't get out until the end of the war...
Company: In nineteen hundred and seventy-four!
Sgt: Sound off!
Company: One, two.
Sgt: Sound off!
Company: Three, four...

That Jody's an ******* ......

When you're on a little nature walk of 12 miles or longer.. You start digging for new material.

Well ladies and gentleman, I can officially say that MEPS was the worst experience of my life. Haha.

There were SO many people there. It was the record number they had ever had to process. I think there

was like 167 people total? I went in this Tuesday to take the ASVAB. I got an 87 which isn't TOO bad.

I was hoping to make 90's but oh well. I got my physicals and stuff done, got to do the infamous duck walk,

but after the swear-in, I was supposed to sign my contract, and right before I was going to, the computers

crashed. So I have to go back again Sunday afternoon and sign-up Monday morning. But after that I'll

be a Marine POOLee. I get to join on as an E2 and I'll be shipping out February 22nd. They said they

could get me out in October, but I'd get stuck in bootcamp for Thanksgiving and Christmas and all that.

Thank you all for your comments, concerns, advice, and words of wisdom. This is a big step in my life,

and I'm so glad that my family and friends have supported me. Can't wait to serve the country.

Congrats. BTW Oct would have been a good time as well. But Feb works as well (Arrived at boot Nov 10 *remember that date)
But either way, cooler in winter at both PI and SD. You'll have plenty of opportunity to be hot, might as well enjoy boot in the shade.

So did they give you a MOS yet? Or are you going to have to wait until after boot to find out?
(happend to me - was told I qualified "Support" which is a broad range.. ended up being an engineer.. ** a grunt that can read **

Thanks. I know October would have been good too, but I just didn't want to be stuck in boot for Christmas and stuff. I

function better in the bitter cold anyway. I do not have a specified MOS because all of the 2009 jobs are covered. I

signed on with an open contract, but I'll have my three job picks sent it right after I sign my contract, so that way when

the 2010 jobs come out in October, I'll have some of the first picks because of my ASVAB score.

I stood on the yellow footprints at MCRD Feb 23 1969--S.D. Calif--(Yeah--Yeah--I'm a Hollywood Marine).
It wasn't too bad, except it was the rainy season it seems. It was cooler than I thought it would be in Calif tho.
In as an E-2?? Wow--a rank grabber already.

I was in ANGLICO,,forward observer ,, I was a weapons and tactics instructor at the infantry training regiment in 1965,, the class most fell asleep in was map reading ,,we used water pistols to keep men awake ..difficult to generate interest in map reading ..
All subjects taught are because of "need to know"
The most important subject is Tactics ,, like fire team in the assault ,,fire & maneuver,, then weapons,, then every thing else,,
the theory that everything is of equal importance ,is a theory

the forward observer & artillery bring organized mayhem to what would otherwise just be a brawl !
FIRE MISSION !! women & children ,carrying a box of puppies,,, fuse v t,, shell he,, deflection 2400,, quadrant 840 ,, fire for effect
