I'm sure there are others, but this a great tool for working on viruses: http://www.virustotal.com/

Right now I'm combating a virus and wasn't sure what it was. When the system would boot it would give error messages pertaining to a couple of system files. I replaced the files form the command prompt, and upon first boot would be fine. Then on the second boot it would throw up the errors again. I upped one of the files to this website and it kicked out this report:

So now I'm actually able to address the specific problem rather trying to carpet bomb the whole PC. AVG makes a cleaner specifically for this virus BTW.

yes, most decent virus scanner makers have detailed info on individual virus's, so you can take specific action.

but, I find the quickest way has always been to remove the drive, connect it via a USB adapter to another computer, and scan/clean it.
ESPECIALLY with virus's which get into the boot sequence

Or boot it off a live cd with antvirus tools on it.. much easier then ripping a friends ( or customers ) pc apart

yes - a very good option, but a bit complicated for many to create
and, todays screwless cases are fairly simple to pop drives in & out
I did for quite sometime use a a boot CD with f-prot - but it was getting cumbersome, and specialty machines with raid controllers and even some newer SATA drives dont always work very well without drivers - but - again - you can exactly pop out raid drives either and scan them.....

I did all of those things to no avail. I ran a half dozen scanners including AVG, Avast, Avast Rootkit Detector, (all from a miniPE disk) Malwarebytes, plus a few other scanners I downloaded. They all found and deleted tons of files, but it came back every time. They also showed the virus with a different name. It was only after I upped a file to that website did I get an accurate report of the virus name. Ran the AVG scanner, gave it a repair installtio to replace the *many* damaged/missing files, and it's working great right now.
