Me and a few buddies want to get a g meter so we can get an idea of how our cars perform against others and to measure improvement when we upgrade. I've googled it and looked on ebay and it seems like there aren't many to choose from. Which one do you have and how do you like it?

GTech Road Race.

I'm happy with it. I don't use it for hp/1/4 mile stuff, I measure cornering G's and download the results (when I remember to turn it on).

I got the SS, I wish I would go the RR (see above) but its good.

Make sure to weigh each car, timeslips also are very helpful as you need to be able to set the pitch factor, which can be calculated by the trap speed on timeslips.

Its only as good as the info you put in. I use the RPM gauge as my shift light and its dead on with my laptop RPM gauge.

Its right on for my 15.5 fiero and my friends 458whp mustang (showed about 377whp with a 3rd or 4th gear pull @ approx. 120mph)

Since your goal is to get an idea of how your car is performing, here is another option:

http://www.ontrackdigital.com/

This is a "street" dyno that uses your car's weight as resistance and then computes a dyno chart. I have not used one myself but I have read a few independant reviews online that show they are usually within 2-5% accuracy of a roller dyno.

Another option if you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch is this $9 download that turns your iPhone into a G-meter:

I bought an IPod Touch and then ordered Dynolicious. I love it. It is a very sensitive device and a great app.

Road and Track

Imagine having a performance dynamometer in your pocket. With Dynolicious, you can measure your vehicle's 0–60 acceleration, quarter-mile time, horsepower, lateral g's and more.

How does an inexpensive download produce data that's so similar to that of expensive test equipment? By making use of the iPhone's sophisticated built-in accelerometer. Another feature we like? It allows you to save a history of your test results. We've put Dynolicious up against our professional testing gear and while it does not deliver the exact results, it does come close, making this a nifty tool for the everyday enthusiast

I looked at a G-tech when I bought my Ipod but decided that my money would be better spent on a device that I could also use every day for multiple purposes. It does everything that I need it to do, and when I am not driving it is a great music player and wifi pda.

There's also an app for the iPhone/iPod touch that has a WiFi OBD2 interface, for recording and measuring such things, plus the performance metrics, plus check/reset check engine light. 'Rev' by DevToaster. Haven't gotten the full version yet, but probably will when my Fiero has a suitable ECU :-)

I just installed Rev. Thanks for the tip. It will do the job as a G meter but it is not as fast to react as Dynolicious. The G readings on Rev seem to be dampened while Dynolicious is fast, fluid, and instantaneous.

Dynolicious also has a prettier display for reading Gs. If you use Rev don't forget to lock the screen orientation or it will think that you have tilted the unit and will rotate the screen 90 degrees making your readings inaccurate.

Rev will give you a very wide range of engine parameters that are not available on the other. I will definitely get the full version when my 3800 SC is finally installed.

I am having trouble posting the video that I made. After doing some research on REV in order to get it to full OBD-II functionality you have to spend another $164 to get it connected to your car. Pricing Link For that price you might as well buy a ScanGauge-II w/ X-Gauge for $159.95. If you only want basic functions Rev is fine and its free if you own an I phone or Ipod touch.
