I own a nice 86 Fiero GT, but I have another question. I have installed the complete steering column assembly from a mid 80's Pontiac Firebird into my 69 Chevy Pickup. All went easier than I expected. But I want to shorten the column 2 - 3 inches, moving the steering wheel closer to the dash. I have had the upper key housing off to replace a faulty wiper switch (stalk), so this part is familiar. But I have never had the rest of the assembly apart, and won't if it's not necessary. Where would be the best place to cut, remove 3 inches, and reweld the shaft housing and steering rod? I have all my own tools, welders, etc. Anyone with any info please email me or post here. Thanks, Lonnie

I have a 70 Chevy swb fleetside. I have had many 68 to 72 era P/U's. My favorite model. What are you looking for, tilt ? I realize that you already have another column but, if your looking for the original look (key not on column), try old Suburbans of the same year. Many had tilt.
Sorry I can not answer your question, just thought I would add.

Thanks for the input. I do already have the tilt column installed, and it looks and works great, I'm just trying to modify the length with the least amount of disassembly possible. My tuuck is a short-bed fleetside, original sky blue w/white top. I run a built 350 with a Z-28 Camaro 5-speed top-loader tranny. Bucket seats and console inside. Again, thanks for the info. Lonnie

Shortening the column is not really the problem.
Shortening the stearing shaft inside, is.
I personally would not recommend cutting & welding the stearing shaft yourself.
Stearing & brakes should never be casually altered.
They must work perfect, time & time again, WITHOUT failure.

I cut & weld far above average (but still below fierofetish), but I would not cut and weld a stearing shaft.
Just too chancy, for me.

Eh, maybe I would.

The solid shaft really doesn't have to be cut. If you're not interested in the warrenty or crash collapsing plastic...which I'm not, in this 69 truck...you can just drive the outer shaft tube up onto the solid shaft the distance you need to shorten, and reweld the outer column tube after removing the amount you need from it. I just did this to my column. Thanks for your interesting input. Lonnie
