I have been looking for trailer couplers and hitch balls that are smaller than 1 7/8". Do they exist? I want to change my garden tractor and trailer over to a ball hitch and 1 7/8" is huge for a small garden trailer like mine. Something like 1 1/4" would be nice.

A note of advise, you can never go wrong by putting a "regular" sized hitch on the lawn mower. With it you can move boats, and empty trailers around much easier than with a car. (In most situations).

Hey Rodney, I did this very thing on my dad's riding mower and trailer.

I don't remember which one we used, but I used the smallest one I could find at Harbor Freight:

Awesome place... I'm sure you'll find what you need there. You might even have one local to you.

Seriously, they sell like machettes for $3.99... and hammers for $1.99... how can you go wrong?

I bought a 55-lb anvil from them for $7.99 seriously...

1 7/8" is the smallest one they list. What do motorcycleists use to pull their trailers? 1 7/8"? That is huge for a motorcycle.

If your tractor hitch plate is anything like the Aierens, it has a 3-hole pattern. I had a rig built with a regular 1 7/8 ball that just wing-nutted onto the plate, and then used a regular hitch pin for the garden trailer. being able to interchange gave me the best of both worlds.

For a REAL giggle, my second mower was an 8hp Snapper (ugly critters, but great fun).........and YES, that thing will pull a decently loaded 30"x72" garden trailer !!

I tried to move my race car / trailer once while I was cutting grass. I used my John Deer lawn tractor. hitched it up, put on the gas and tractor lifted the front end right on up and over on my head. Didnt do that again............
