I was going to make an April Fools joke, but instead of that this year:

I am taking time to remember Dusty Springfield, who Elton John called:
"The greatest white singer ever."

I didn't know her or her music until 1987 when the "Pet Shop boys" song what have I done to deserve this-- brought her to my attention.

Her style of singing was close to what Amy Winehouse has today. I didn't know it until later but Dusty also sung "Give me the night" The song was part of the "Corvette Summer" movie soundtrack. If you watch that movie its in the credits in the end of the show and appears in the movie during some scenes.

Dusty began her career in 1963, sang with many of the stars of that era, including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin.

She was not without scandal and controversy, but then again who isn't ?

Dusty passed away, of breast cancer March 2, 1999 aged 59. She passed away on the same day she was to be presented with the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth.

"Even though I never met you (Dusty) I could tell you were a class act".

Thank You Dusty for singing and touching many people's lives, including mine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When my Fiero acts up, I always think "What have I done to deserve this..."

Dusty was a talented singer all right, but "Sir" Elton was a little too generous I think.

The greatest white singer ever has some pretty talented people to choose from. Try Frank Sinatra, or Bing Crosby, or how about Annie Lennox or Cher?

It is always a shame to see some go with cancer and with a talented and beautiful person so much the greater.

Thanks for the memory.

For her era, she may well have been the best. Sinatra/Como had already passed their prime by that time.
When she sang it- I really wished I had been that son of a preacher man.

I think Elton's comment was worded that way because most of dusty's songs were in a sort-of "black" style.

When Dusty passed away, another singer, Lesley Gore, wrote this eulogy,

"I met DUSTY SPRINGFIELD in 1963 on the BBC TV show Top of the Pops. I was promoting It's My Party, and Dusty was one of the show's hosts. Her talent was obvious the moment she opened her mouth--a sound so unique that she could take someone else's song and make it her own. She sang live with the band and sounded totally awesome. I lip-synched and felt somewhat foolish.

"Our paths crossed again in Los Angeles in the '70s. We both enjoyed watching women's tennis and developed quite a friendship at the matches. She was very bright, with a great sense of humor. And I got to know her musically when she recorded a song I wrote, Love Me By Name. Dusty knew exactly what she wanted. She hand-picked the musicians and worked with the arranger for weeks. When she went into the vocal booth, put on the headset and closed her eyes, she reached down into the depths of her soul and made magic. As Dusty is wailing and the record is fading, she adlibs two little words: "sweet baby." She reserved this phrase for the songs she most loved. It was like getting the Dusty Springfield seal of approval.

"It's sad that she should pass just a few weeks before she was to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But she'll be there, I'm sure, so the rhythm section had better be tight. "
