Firefox. WinXP. 2Ghz/1GB machine. 4 tabs open.

CPU usage is at 50% - constantly. Memory usage is at 270MB.

This is with firefox 3.1 Beta because I was told it was better with memory - they fixed some leaks or w/e. Firefox 3.07 or whatever it was was at 400MB usage. Slightly better, but still bad.

It feels like I'm running a 300mhz machine, this is terrible! This is a Dell notebook, is it possible the CPU is getting throttled or something that's causing this problem?

Dont know, but I have a Sony Vaio laptop I am selling. Its a 1.6Mhz with 1 GB memory, XP. and firefox doesn't slow it down at all. Maybe give you computer a laxative aka disk defrag.

I'm a BIG fan of wiping the WHOLE system and then re-installing the new operating system from scratch.
Then go from there.

But that's just me.
I HATE spending time tracking down false leads............................

i know it is not much help, but my moms computer does the same thing. There is something in her computer that just does not like firefox.

My new laptop can run 45 tabs open at once without slowing it down, and it is not that much more powerful than her desktop. Something in her bios, or registry has an INFORMATION TRANSFER RESTRICTION that mine does not have.

A friend of mines macbook (dual boot with windows XP, and running on the XP side) her macbok was the same way. It ran firefox really slowly. We were trying to update the software on her iphone and it took over 2 days. When talking with someone at apple about it, they had me delete that one file in her registry, and now her computer does not do it anymore. Hers now runs firefox just as easily as mine does.

I can't remember what that file was, but once it was removed, firefox ran a LOT faster, and didn't plug up her machine as much. I am trying to find the file to remove it on my moms as well.
