I know how to build one, but how to install it so it will always be smooth enough on a dirt road for a Fiero to easily travel over daily is another thing entirely. My intentions are build the treadway from my stack of 1/4" X 2" X 6" channel iron. 14' wide, 7' across. How can I install it so it doesn't drop down over time and make the approaches give me a rough time getting on and off of it?

Whew!
When I read the topic, I pictured you trying to put a big pointy metal train type thing on the front of your Fiero!

These have several supports underneath to keep them level and straight. Ground preparation under them is the key to them staying in place.

Lots of gravel under them that is nice and level will keep any weight that ever drives over them from distorting them.

Lots of good info and tips on how to buy pipe and such, just try any link on top.

More good info here.

Best cattle guard I ever saw was built from rail road track and sitting on a poured foundation with a whistle running the length of it.
I agree with Steve, the foundation is the biggest part of keeping it stationary and stable.

i hope you have a way to keep the underside clean...they have a habit of collecting dirt over time and becoming worthless.
