A friend of my just bought a 2000(?) Impala.
It was originally equipped with side airbags (mounted in the side of the seat.)
He is replacing the seat with one that is in better condition, but that does not have the side airbag.
With the original seat (with the airbag) removed, the "airbag" light is on.
I understand that a resistor can be plugged into the car harness to fake out the BCM, and make it think it still has an airbag connected.
Anyone know what value?

And no... We're NOT going to ohm out the airbag.

Thanks!

DTC B0040 LF/Driver Side Deployment Loop Resistance Low

Conditions for Setting the DTC
Driver side deployment loop resistance is less than 1.3 ohms for 300 milliseconds.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
Deployment loop voltage out of range test - Driver side deployment loop resistance is at least 6 ohms for 300 milliseconds.
Deployment loop resistance measurement test - Driver side deployment loop resistance is more than 3.7 ohms for 300 milliseconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
The SDM commands ON the AIR BAG warning lamp via Class 2 serial data.

This is from the GM SI DVD for a 2000 Impala
Looks like 2-3 OHMS

its not illegal to remove them them. Where did you hear this from?? At least you can remove any of them besides the steering wheel mounted bags. ANything that was "optioned" on the car and didnt come in a base model car can be removed. I have disabled all my airbags in all my cars. I will never trust a ford airbag again. 2 times i have seen them cause more damage than would have been caused otherwise.

it may not be illegal but if some one else drives it and they get hurt because of the bags intentionally not working you could be liable legal wise $

Sad to say, all Georgia (actually, metro ATL) cares about is whether your car has clean breath.
It could be dropping parts off going down the road, and probably not raise any eyebrows.

This is no worse than replacing airbag equipped bucket seats with Recaros or Corbeaus.
And much less than replacing a standard (airbag) steering wheel with a Grant or something similar.
In reading other forums, it appears to be quite common (for off-road use, of course. )

well I always disable them. I have had 2 big problems with them. I had an escort and rearended an escalade. Neither bag went off until after the crash. Passenger side went off after we asked each other if we where ok and it broke his arm. The drivers side didnt go off until I went to unbuckle my belt. And I had an f150 and the bag went off when I hit a pothole. My focus has had the side airbags disabled and the steering wheel replaced. The only functioning bag is the passenger side bag in the dash.

I heard it from the state trooper that give the orientation when i went to get my state inspection license. Are you ever going to get caught, not likely but it is illegal. Just like the brake light covers on trucks that make your brake lights look like a ram or a chevy emblem and what not. Those are illegal as well and will not pass state inspection. (well let me specify in missouri its illegal but im pretty sure the air bag one is a federal law)
